Yeah, weight is more important at this point vs. over physical dimensions - it won't be significantly more portable with the trimmed side bezels and reduced thickness, but 0.5lbs reduction would be outstanding.
That being said, I don't think it'll be that much - my prediction, and even 0.34 lbs reduction making it 1.1lbs (or right at 500g)
as long as its light enough similar to the iPad 2

You know, I didn't think of it in all the iPhone hype, but now that the 5s is out, and I'm still happy with my 4s, I may just upgrade my 3rd gen iPad. I use that pad so much more than I thought I would. It'd be a decent bump up on my mobile computing platform. Very curious to see what the iPad 5 will look like!

I suspect there might be intentional leaks. Not saying this is one. But Tim Cook made a joke at the last keynote "perhaps you've seen this before" - which could have been a very tongue-in-cheek way of "admitting" that Apple leaked the pictures or didn't care.
Ultimately - it's not real until the reveal
The iPad 2 isn't that much lighter than a 4th gen, either in exact specs (1.33lbs vs. 1.44, 0.11 lbs difference in WiFi models), or in "feel" (having worked with both pretty extensively).
I agree though, every little bit helps, and that's not a bad starting point, but I'm really hoping for a another 2-3ths of a pound (even vs. an iPad 2) as I think that will make a real world effective difference!

I just hope that Apple won't fail miserably by not showing up with an iPad mini retina. The disappointment would be huge and it could hurt their reputation substantially. Right now I'm more than willing to upgrade my iPad mini and my iPad 3rd gen for xmas, if not, I'm ...not going to switch but just wait.

I don't think one's state of dress is related to what case one might have on an ipad.
Considering there are no leaks so far, I am not expecting a gold iPad or iPad mini, but I don't understand why they wouldn't. It has been the most desired iPhone. Maybe that is more because of limited supplies of gold, but it still shows that there is at least a demand for it.
Will I pick up an iPad mini regardless? Yes, assuming it has a retina display. But I am still hoping for gold.

Haha yeah, I got a 1st gen infront of me, I'm loving the color combination. Hope this new one will be available in that combo as well, it's time to upgrade.
