This worked for me

here's the thread I found it at https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/467159/

"to use a .png file as icon do this:

1) Open the .png file in Preview
2) Press command-A to select the entire image
3) Press command-C to copy the selection
4) Control-Click on the file/folder you would like to change
5) Click the icon (so there is a frame around it)
6) Press command-V to paste the image into that

Done. Enjoy!

still can't change dock icons with SL

I no longer get the "get info" window I got with Tiger. Then, I merely copied the icon I wanted and pasted it over the icon in the get info window, and dragged it to the dock. Now when I click get info that display is totally different, not at all like what people have been pasting in their replies here. I get no icon to paste over (I tried to both drag and paste in the screen shot of this display but it doesn't work - "insert image" above asks for a URL, and the screen shot of course doesn't have one). Nor is there any read permission at the bottom, and clicking on Permissions in the get info window has nothing that resembles read permissions. Any icon I grab to drag to the dock turns into that crummy satellite dish. ???

For me, using Candy Bar to change icons on preinstalled Snow Leopard apps (like TextEdit), I've found that if you have problems ...

... after you've copy/pasted your new icon (to no avail)...

... if you then remove the icon from the dock, log out, log back in and reinstall the application to the dock.... it often does the trick. :)

Forget about permissions.

You are Pressing cmd+C instead of, first: opening the image you want to use, pressing cmd+A, then cmd+C. Then get info App icon and retry.

Thank you so much Rupert!! Been trying for hours to figure this out. Your Preview trick worked like a charm.
