If you're just friends and thinking about getting her something for valentines day in mid October, go ask her out. 
take her out for dinner, hell, cook her something. Girls who aren't materialistic will love personalized things. It doesn't even have to be expensive.
However, don't get stuck in that friendzone.

Just ask her out, today. Someone might ask her out before you between now and valentines day and you won't have that opportunity anymore. Why wait for tomorrow when there is today?
