I'm not sure where you got the idea that these apps were supposed to be free; you definitely have to pay for them (as does anybody else).
I have a quick question. I got these free apps on my phone. Does that mean I can get them on my MacBook too? Or are those two separate app stores?

Same stores. You can get them on your MacBook, too.
Not true at all. Mac App Store and iOS App Store are two different stores.
The iOS version of these apps is different from the Mac version of these apps. Buying one does not grant you access to the other.
If you buy a brand new Mac now, these apps will be free. If you have a 5s, but an older Mac, you will get these apps free on your iPhone, but cannot get them free for your Mac.
