I want to know if I were to transfer 100GB from one external drive to another external drive, does the 100GB pass through my iMacs internal drive first? Does it get written to the internal drive at all? I know this may sound like a dumb question, but my iMac only has a 256GB SSD internal so I don't want to fill it up with a transfer or cause uneccessary writing to it if it does. Thanks

Definitely not, it goes directly between the two drives. If it had to write to your internal drive as well, the whole process would be at least twice as long, and that would be dumb.
