Possible to use Digital AV adapter with new iPad?

I have the iPad 3 and have the Apple 30-pin digital AV adapter.

I plan on buying the iPad air and 5S and wondering if this adapter is worthless or can I use the lightning to 30 pin adapter with it?

The 30 pin adapter will not work with it. The digital AV adapter for lightning-based devices as significantly different internal circuitry.
