There would be a business idea. airlines send all the lost electronica to a company and that company charges 5% finders fee from the owner for every phone/electronics they ship back to the owner. i would gladly pay 30 dollar plus shipping if they send back a lost iPhone. I'm surprised this hasn't been done yet.

To the OP: hope you get the phone back. Airlines are very slow in processing things like this.

That would be great if there was a way to find the owner. How woul you do that if the phone was password locked? It's kind of sad that Apple won't help you find owners when you find a phone.

The way the airline sees it is that if you were careless enough to lose it in the first place, why should they help you locate and return said item? And then of course there's all sorts of dirty people at airports/on airplanes just scrounging for dropped or forgotten goods which they can fence for some nice dough.

When I go on trips, I take only a carry-on and make sure my stuff is nicely packed by using clothes as a cover inside to seal any gaps in the bag and that it's zipped tight. My phone, wallet and keys are on my person at all times and in tight pockets. You can't take any chances.

Sucks this happened to you OP but when you're out and about like this you need to be damn near OCD to keep track of your family's things. Leave nothing to chance in the future. :)

I've found 2 iPhones in my life 1 was not locked called the contact name Mom and told her I found a phone / she told me the owner worked in Macys in the mall of the mall parking lot I found it at. Second time at the airport - gave it the boarding agent near the seats I found it at because it was locked / the agent looked shocked - So OP I think your phone will turn up soon - Yes stuff happens so put insurance on it and give her a nice 5 min spill about responsibly that's it that's all

And unfortunately it was still on airplane mode. We were flying into Orlando and I think it fell out of her open top bag on an AirTran flight.

It is set up with a passcode and Find My iPhone is ready to notify me and play a sound and message with my number as soon as someone turns off airplane mode. I also sent it a text with my phone number.

Still I'm not very optimistic. It is on iOS 7 so I don't think anyone will be able to use it. And It is locked with a passcode. I called the airport lost and found, the airline lost items/baggage office and filed a. Lost item form on their website. They claim everything is sent to Texas and they will notify me if it turns up.

I wish I could remotely turn off airplane mode. That would help a lot.

Anyone had any susses getting one back in this type if situation?

Btw, if someone out thee found it and reads this after finding out it is useless, PM me and I will give you a shipping address and ask no questions!

Robert, chalk this up to "thats life" as I know you will. I am assuming your daughter is a teenager, I have one too, and these type of things happen. My daughter wasn't careful one time doing laundry and put her ipod through the washer. She had a minor fender bender backing out of a parking space. What will come out of this is your daughter will be even more careful in the future with her things. To the people bashing because she should have done this or done that, your day will come, you will lose something one day and wonder how did that happen. When things like this happen it can be frustrating and bothersome, but thats it. Be thankful it was just a phone and not something very serious as I know you are! Have a great vacation at Disney!!

FWIW, about 7 years ago I lost my wallet with credit cards, ID and some cash at the Delta gates in San Jose waiting on a red eye to east coast. Only when I reached Atlanta and looked to buy some coffee did I realize that I had no money on me. I changed my cards, got new ID and moved on. About 4 months later, someone from Delta Air Lines called me saying they have my wallet and to pick it up from their San Jose baggage office with an alternate ID as proof. My wallet was returned intact, not missing a dollar... And the employee refused any reward money. I took note of the employee and wrote in a letter of appreciation.

Thank you. Right on the money.

A young girl who had just obtained her license backed into my wife and I a few years ago. She was hysterical. She said her dad would kill her.

I calmed her down and said it is not if you will have your first accident, it is when. Today is a good day. It happened and no one was hurt.

We learn from these things and we move on realizing that much worse could have happened.

I am skeptical but maybe we will get it back. If not she will end up downgraded in phones for a couple of years and learn a lesson the hard way. But you are right. Jt will help her be more responsible in the future.

For those who don't know, 3-pat down for men is:

Pat down 1: Keys
Pat down 2: Wallet
Pat down 3: Phone

The order doesn't really matter as long as all of the above are met.

My BookBook iPhone case is my wallet, so that frees up a slot for "Adjust nuts," which any man will agree should rank high on the list in any relocation.

Thank you for doing that.

Folks tend to be very free with their complaints yet rarely express gratitude when it's earned. Be assured your letter made someone's week.

I work in the airport. nothing new. I see people leave their phones charging or even their wallets in the seats all the time.

2 months ago I almost lost my iPhone 5 because the TSA. while I was going through TSA security checkpoint they decided to take my bag and sweater out of the bin. And since I didn't put my iPhone 5 inside my bag but in the bin a stupid TSA officers decided for some reason it was ok to remove my bag out of the bin without properly checking to see if there was anything else in the bin before giving it to someone else. Then when I was in the other side of the checkpoint waiting for my bag and sweater to come out of the x-ray machine to my surprise my bag and sweater came out without the bin. I begin to tell the TSA officers where's the bin with my iPhone 5. And after 45 minutes of the TSA officers looking for my iPhone they told me to return after work to see of they found it. I tried calling it but no one answered. A hour afterwards I decided to use my co-workers phone and tried my luck and see if someone would answer. A TSA officer picked up and it turned out someone took my iPhone 5 by mistake and later realized it was not theirs. They gave it to a TSA officer and told me to pick it up. So u rushed to get it

Needless to say. Who hires the majority of these dumb TSA officers? Something I will never understand.

i guess about 50% of phone have no passcode on it. owners of lost phones, cameras, iPod or even Zunes would go to one website, regardless on what airline they lost a gadget and give information how to ID they phones and if the company can make a match they ship it to the rightful owner.

I would assume that about 20% of phones would go back to their owners. the rest would be not identified and disposed of.

right now it seems your chance to get a phone back is somewhere around 1%.

this are of course all just guesses. certainly a business idea but would also take some work if the business case is really there. legal hurdles would e there as well (e.g. who decides who the rightful owner is?)

The same happened with me when I was travelling from Singapore to Las Vegas last year and fortunately I got my iPhone 5 back in just one week. You'll be shocked how easy it is to get your phone back. :) Here's what I did..
After I realised that I'd left my phone in the plane, I immediately took out my iPad and searched for the next flight to Singapore. After 18 hours, I flew back to Singapore, took my iPad out and searched for Singapore Airlines SQ1400 (the same flight in which I left my phone) to Vegas and booked my ticket for the very next day.
After I got into the plane the next day, I immediately rushed to the seat where I was seated and surprisingly, my iPhone was lying peacefully under the seat's cushion. :D
Yes, it's that easy! I highly recommend that you travel in the same plane once again, only to find your daughter's iPhone. :apple:

If this can help someone someday...

I have an app on my phone called TitleFx ,with it you can write any thing you want on a picture .

I use it to write down on pictures I use on locksreens :

-Yptcn's iPhone
-Home number
-Email address
-ICE:Family member phone number .

So all those tickets you purchased cost you how much just to find your phone?

Info this as well. My lock screen says "If found, pleas cal xxx-xxx-xxxx"

I suggested that to my kids but one of my daughters recently switched backgrounds and then lost the phone :(

Don't put things into airplane mode. That's the lesson here.

If you aren't in airplane mode on a transcon flight, the incredibly fast cell switching and searching will kill the battery. Unless one is expecting to lose a phone, how would that help a traveler's cause?

What if you checked it 20 times and it still fell out? Irresponsible then?

The whole point is....you can check something a million times....[stuff] just happens. No way will I put judgement on somebody by calling them "irresponsible" you would have a point if she left the phone in the seat...in the cup holder ect. She was responsible to put it in the bag...it just slipped out somehow.

I'm going to bed now....I'm turning off my game and putting the remote control on my desk safely.....you know because if it some how falls on the floor....i guess I was irresponsible LOL....you people are really crazy. Can't believe I'm up entertaining this nonsense.

[Stuff] doesn't always happen if you zipped it or stored it safely so it cant fall out.
That's all I was suggesting.
You making it sound that its impossible to have secured it more so this didn't happen. Like I said above hope she learns something from it so she can be more careful next time. That's all.
There is a lesson to be learned with every mishap.
But according to you she could not have done anything further to prevent this from happening.
Zero logic. You're one of these people that keep blaming luck for bad things that happen to them but never take responsibility.
Its just [stuff] happened:D Take care:D

(Yawn) what are we discussing again? Still beating a dead horse after 2 days?

I'm not sure why you're wasting your time rebuffing people instead of just filing a claim with Amex purchase protection and enjoying your Disney vacation.

Actually I did ignore your rude comment on the last page and didn't know it was you I was replying to with another one. Never mind. I'll ignore you again.
