I thought the same but then reinstalling SwitchResX seemed to fix the problem.

Did you try it on an internal or external monitor setup?

Because I know that it works for internal monitors, but not for external monitors...

I did remove everything and reinstalled SwitchRes X, but it still works only on the internal monitor.

Please report back results. Thanks

^here it is

Unable to do this with a 2010 27'' iMac with an AMD 5750. If someone wouldn't mind can one of you guys post a screen show of your desktop in 1920x1080 hiDPI mode. Am thinking of getting a new iMac just for that, 720p hiDPI things are too big, and 2600x1440 things are too small think 1080p hiDPI might be just right.

Reasonable HiDPI Setting for a 1080p TV?

Is there a HiDPI setting that works well for a 1080p TV (making things crisp at the 1080p level, while still fitting things on the screen)?

Right now I'm using 720p on a 1080p TV, just so things on the screen are readable at a normal distance (from the couch).

Isn't there a way to set my TV to its full 1080p resolution, and have things scale, and remain sharp and crisp?

I tried the default HiDPI setting available, and while things are sharp and scaled, they are scaled up too much, and apps no longer fit on the screen.

Isn't there a happy medium?

I just gave this a shot with my Mac Mini (2011 Server) connected to a Panasonic Viera 42" 1080p display, and it looks pretty good. I created the custom scaled 3200x1800 resolution and I'm running the display at 1600x900 HiDPI. It's an improvement from the native 1080p resolution.

Yes, that's the best setting.

Enjoy it while you can, because it's not working on Mavericks anymore.

Got it working on the new released Mavericks today with SwitchresX, although it won't show in the Display prefpane.

I added the custom resolution 3200x1800, saved and rebooted.

After the reboot the 1600x900 HiDPI resolution will show up in Current Resolutions tab and you can enable this with the checkbox on the left.

This is on my late 2012 iMac.

As a previous poster mentioned, 1920x1200 hidpi (3840x2400) works great on a 2012 13" retina mbp. Awesome for coding! Performance is adequate, only issues are exposé having a slow frame rate. Other than that, this is my fav resolution on the 13.

Can anyone confirm what the highest hidpi resolution on the current 15 rmbp's? Would love to know if I were to move up to a 15.

Can we get more people reporting back on this? Does it work on mavericks or has it been barred by apple?

mini +30 or 27" displays tweaked to custom resolutions would be interesting to see how this goes. :)

Please help

I'm on Maverick and experiencing some problems enabling my own resolution. I really would like to have a 1600 hidpi and a 1440 hidpi enabled on my late 2012 27inch iMac. Can't someone just share the Edid file with me? Thanks. Great find btw.

So my understanding is SwitchResX will NOT work with external monitors. So it's a safe assumption it won't work with the soon to hit the stores Mac Pro w/Thunderbolt display?

Of course SwitchResX works with external monitors....
The hack described in this thread may or may not be possible on the current MacOS with any of the current hardware, but SwitchResX is not at fault there.

Would this work on the internal monitor of a late 2010 MacBook Pro (non-retina)? If so, what should my settings be?

Would this work on any 4k Display with the new mac Pro to get us to a 2560x1440 resolution with videos and pictures being displayed at their native pixel size?

(like on the rmbp?)

hold on

Hold on
If you hook up an u2711 to a mac mini isn't the entire screen filled then? Is the resolution off? Because if so, I'm going iMac...

So to do that we need the following softwares
- SwitchResX

Thats not true. You just have to enter this in a terminal!
sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.windowserver DisplayResolutionEnabled -bool YES;
sudo defaults delete /Library/Preferences/com.apple.windowserver DisplayResolutionDisabled;

Tested, works!

SwitchResX 1080p Scaling with nMP

So I'm wondering if anyone has managed to scale Thunderbolt displays on a New Mac Pro down to 1080p HiDPI

I hate working on 2540 x 1440

I was hoping the "retina" type scaling so easily done on my rMBP would be an out of the box feature considering the power of the New Mac Pro.

It has AMD graphics cards, which may or may not be why SwitchResX does not seem to enable the custom HiDPI resolutions I'm looking for even when creating a custom scaled resolution 3840x2160 > 1920x1080

Anyone have any luck on the New Mac Pro or anything with an AMD graphics card?

I even updated to OSX 10.9.3 Beta as they included some Native scaling resolutions for 4k monitors... but nothing new for my Thunderbolt displays.

Help please.
