iPod touch 4th Gen iPod Touch lag making it unusable!!!

First, it has an almost 3 year old hardware. I've seen brand new dual or quad core Android devices having more lags than your iPod probably has.

Second, is your iPod jailbroken? Try to restore it with iTunes.

If you really want to torture yourself, go play with a 4S - no lag at all.

I got rid of my ipod touch, got a 4S and never looked back.

Do the debug log files show anything? Low memory errors perhaps?

Is it laggy only when switching among apps? Is it laggy after a fresh reboot?

I disagree with the "three year old hardware" comment. This is the most recent Touch hardware available. I have a 3G Touch and iOS 5 runs fine on it.

I'd bet some serious dough that you're jailbroken. There's nothing wrong with that, I jailbreak/root anything I can get my hands on. But don't expect a fluid, stable experience on older hardware thats been jailbroken... it's just not going to happen. If it's that irritating, restore it.

When you restored it using iTunes, did you restore it from a backup after the actual software restore was complete? If so, the restore was pretty much useless. You should always setup your iOS device as new when doing a software restore to prevent the same issue from being inherited again from the backup.

Additionally, you can tell if the iPod is jailbroken by searching for "Cydia" in Spotlight on the homescreen. If you restored the software though, Cydia probably won't be present. But some of the extraneous stuff that it adds may still be present in your backup causing your problems.

If you haven't restored from a previous backup of that device, then ignore my above advice. Sometimes, this kind of behavior can be attributed to faulty hardware or damage caused to the hardware (like liquid).

I am saying that the 4g iPod touch is the most laggiest device ever. I don't even stress the thing out yet when it runs low on memory which is all the time apps black out and crash back to the home screen. When I scroll in Safari and certain apps sometimes there is that annoying half a second delay before it moves. Then when I type even on the mobile version of this site I can see big letters pop up and lag a half a second then type lag etc. This is all because of the crappy amount of ram they put in this thing. The A4 processor is fine even if it is capped at 800 Mhz but the bottleneck is the low 256 MB of Ram that is in this thing and iOS 5 is a pig when it comes to sucking up Ram. If they would have only put 512 MB in this thing it would have still be fine.

I can tell you now I am on the verge of getting a iPhone 4S. I don't want the iPhone 5 if it has a new 19 pin connector because it will make all my stereo docks obsolete. It is not that I want a iPhone but need one because the iPod touch sucks really bad with iOS 5.1.1. I will give you a example. I was listening to streaming radio in app controlling it with the remote then I go and minimize the app and then the home screen is laggy so I open up SpeedTest app. It too starts up slow and laggy. I then start to run the speed test and then it just blanks out back to the home screen again. Check how much memory is available and it was about 4 MB. I say to myself I have to get a iPhone.

If Apple does not release a new touch I will get a iPhone contract and all. The only thing that is stopping me now is that I don't want one with AT&T or Verizon. I want one with T-Moblie but they don't offer it yet. I don't know how Sprint is though.

Do what I'm doing to solve this:
1. Buy a used AT&T 4S, bought mine from cellcow.com for $400 on the dot.
2. Contact AT&T for an unlock, if they deny, buy a guaranteed unlock for $50 from someone on eBay.
3. Boom, factory unlocked 4S for $450 ready to use on T-Mobile. They're rolling out their new iPhone compatible network apparently which the iPhone can use to get the same 14.4 Mbps down that AT&T currently has.

My iPod touch 4g no lagg at all. iOS 5.1.1

I think it's able to be slowed down A LOT if you watch porn on it, just saying, repetitive streaming of video will definitely slow down a device.

Yeah, my iPod touch 4g is also extremely laggy. I only use it for listening to music (not videos or anything) and have hardly any apps on it. Even opening the Settings app takes four tries before it actually opens...

This thread is from 2012 when the 4G only had iOS 5, showing it was laggy even before iOS 6. Should've had 512MB of RAM, I'm assuming the retina display uses more RAM since the images it has to deal with are larger.
