Mail says I have tens or hundreds of incoming/outgoing messages

I hope someone comes along with an answer as I get the same thing!

I realised this quite early of using my 13" rMBP Apple's Pushmail is Horrific !! Try and install Airmail is much reliable and efficient compared to Apple's Pushmail !

Don't know but can you see what they are? 67 copies of the same one? Spam??

I also get this. Usually its 70 or so outgoing, and 40 incoming and then you receive just one. I'm not sending 70 or expecting 40 so I'm not too worried but obviously something isn't right.

The count restarts at 1 every time Mail.app gets restarted. Your 60 is the 60th message since mail was started.
