No I am not asking for an illegal way to install ML on my machine.

I bought an iMac with Mavericks preinstalled. The thing is that I don't like Mavericks and ML 10.8.5 was almost perfect. The system was much faster ( finder and animation specifically ) and most of the features in Mavericks aren't needed.

It's not possible for me to do a clean boot or recovery as it's gonna install 10.9 back.

Is it possible to use the license of Mavericks on ML ? What to do ? I really don't want to pay for that thing.

There are ways that I won't go into, however if you Google I am certain that you can find it and install with no problems at all.

I Googled but there are mixed opinions and results.

Has anyone tried it before ? To install an OS earlier than the one shipped ?

It's only £13.99 in the App Store. Call up Apple and ask if it would install as a downgrade. You spend £1000+ on a computer, don't go braking the law for £14 worth.

I already said that when I upgraded to 4471, 32GB, SSD and GTX780M.

Honestly I don't feel like paying anything anymore on this machine, I already spent $3900. It's very disappointing to buy an iMac and be forced to use Windows

And also I don't have Apple Store in the country I'm living in at the moment. There is no phone support, just resellers... that's why I'm asking on this forum if it has been done before.

Also the iMac doesn't come with a DVD drive so not sure if it can be done over USB. Or maybe I have to pay for something new everytime I want to do the silliest thing.

It's possible to make a USB installer.

However, the Haswell iMacs that had Mountain Lion came with a special build of 10.8.5, which is different from the combo build of 10.8.5 for all other Macs.

And what's special about it ? I mean seriously my iMac is cursed with the Mavericks ?

Apple didn't include the Haswell hardware drivers in the standard build of 10.8.5. A special build was released for Haswell and only contains drivers for Haswell Macs.

How can I get this special built ? any idea ?

The irony when people were bragging about getting Mavericks installed... And I thought myself lucky... heh

So you're telling me that there's no way going backward ? How would the system know if I'm trying to boot from USB and format the partition ? Is this a firmware restriction ? I see no point in not allowing to install an older OS version.

There are some back channels, including the bay full of pirates...

Yeah but can you confirm that it's possible to use ML on a Mavericks machine ?

It's a 4mbps connection here, don't want to wait 7 hours for nothing

Yesterday at 11:08 AM>Today at 8:42 AM seems like you could have already downloaded it and tried.

And there is a point...the windows environment is fairly unrestricted. However, if you tried to put, say, windows 3.11 on a machine built this year, you would have all kinds of grief because of driver issues. Even Windows XP has lost it's support from Microsoft. I realize we are only talking about one version backwards, but the whole reason Apple only releases it's software on it's own hardware is for ensured compatibility. They aren't going to compromise that by allowing people to go backwards, or even forwards in some cases. They have billions of devices out in the wild. They don't have time for people calling them asking why ML doesn't work on a machine that was never designed for it.....therefore, they don't support that practice.

You can try doing an Internet Recovery and see what it offers. Many machines will load the first OS it was offered with when using Internet Recovery from what I have seen.

When booting the machine, hold down Cmd+Option+R. It will pause for a second and then start getting the basesystem.dmg file from Apple instead of the Recovery HD that is on your hard disk. See if it loads the 10.8 version (it will be obvious as it will say Install a new copy of Mountain Lion as an option and have the linen wallpaper).

Once the upgrade to 10.9 is done, it will update the Recovery HD to 10.9. This, if you only hold down R when you boot it attempts the local Recovery HD first to boot from, the it will fetch its version of the OS. Booting from the Internet instead of locally may get around this.

Unfortunately no go. It's a 10.9 what it's loading. God damn it...

It didn't allow me to install a 10.8.5. I tried that and it says the current version is not compatible with my machine.

I can't believe how lame it is. Really...

I have a Late 2013 Haswell iMac that shipped with Mavericks and I already own Mountain Lion, having purchased it for my previous Late 2009 iMac. In the Mac App Store, Mountain Lion is still right there among the purchases, with a download button.

In fact, I was having some USB problems with Mavericks shortly after I took delivery of it and I tried downgrading to Mountain Lion. It installed without issues but I went back to Mavericks for a different reason:

If you use iPhoto, Pages, Numbers, Keynote, etc they will all be unusable if you've updated to their latest versions in the Mac App Store in Mavericks already. Once you're back in Mountain Lion you can find the apps in the list of purchases in the Mac App Store but they will just say "not compatible with this version of OS X".

Anyway, I have a dev account and those USB issues have thankfully been resolved in the 10.9.2 beta. I have no further problems with Mavericks.

Not sure if you installed the 7th beta of 10.9.2 but have you noticed a graphics performance improvement ?

I have indeed (13C62). I can't say I've noticed any particular graphics performance improvements, but then I wasn't having any problems before (animations, etc). In other words, it's been as fluid and fast in Mavericks for me as it was in ML.

Is there anything in particular you're experiencing I could try to recreate for you? Or are you already using the latest beta too?

I'm still on 10.9.1... too many headache seriously even after a clean boot.

Graphic performance is mediocre. On windows I get like twice more FPS for the same benchmark and setup.

Finder is sluggish sometimes, application folder is slow when I open it the first time or after a while. It opens fast the 2nd time. Dragging windows isn't smooth at all. Not stuttering whatever you call it but it's not like it's a maxed out PC, not even close.

I get some errors in the console, not sure if it's related but I've been googling for an answer since ever :

I'm seriously tired of this BS... Ok OSX boots in 8 seconds for me but then I have barely anything installed.

Everytime I install an App I have to deal with all the headache. On Windows 8.1 performance is blazing fast. I don't have any hardware issue and I tried a clean boot.

I only have iStats, Chrome, VLC and Microsoft office 2011 installed.

I resized the windows partition and left the OSX with 40GB of space. Not gonna use it for some time...
