The thick of it
Unicef has created an HTML5 page with an interesting concept: go to that page with your iPhone. For every ten minutes you ignore the phone, UNICEF (through a sponsor) will provide a day's worth of drinking water to someone.

http://tap.unicefusa.org

The only problem is that your phone needs to be unlocked and running the whole time. But if you're sitting at your desktop with the phone charging nearby, it's a simple way to help out.

Why can't I use my iPad instead?

If a sponsor is able to provide the funding for every person that does this, why wouldn't that sponsor just provide those funds and get it done without basing it on whether or not someone leaves their phone alone?

I could be wrong, but this seems to support my suspicion that there is a hidden agenda at work.
