Terrible form factor.

I can just see people trying to fish it out of the front pockets of their tight jeans... bouncing around and gyrating.

But I hope Neil Young will remember... a Southern man don't need him around, anyhow.

Maybe they will at $5 per track

I first read "Porno Player" and thought "Damn, Neil Young sure went downhill"

That is an awful shape to fit in anybody's pocket.

Better leave it in a jacket otherwise people are going to think you are a creeper walking around with that in your pocket.

It's actually technically a triangular prism.

To lay it flat on it's back you will need to buy the PonoStand, an audiophile-approved device that will improve sound by also aligning the electron flow with the Earth's rotation, $399.

For those saying "too late", do you actually understand what the product is? Hint: It's not an MP3 player.

I agree that this thing will flop, but the technology is not outdated at all. If anything, this thing is "too early", not "too late".

This is not an MP3 player. Oh, I'm sure it will be compatible with MP3, but that is not the purpose of this device.

Some of you must not be aware of Neil Young and his attitude. He wouldn't even release his music on CD at first. This is not for geeks, it is aimed at audiophiles.

But yes, probably too late. The iPods with digital out came years ago.

Neil, Young?

Seriously? Neil is 68… Not quite "Young" anymore.
Therefore the mentality is not quite there.
Who's gonna spend $300 for a slightly better sound experience?
People want quality, yes, but at what cost?
CD's are disappearing and they have the best quality. People go for convenience and a fair price. Nobody uses CD's anymore...
Also, this thing looks ugly and the music is going to be expensive.
Who's gonna re-purchase their whole library for a new item without an ecosystem behind it and a horrible form factor…
Not gonna work. Neil, stick to music making…

This is the kind of product that comes out when you get a wealthy person who isn't familiar with technology to bankroll it. I imagine Neil in a meeting where people are stroking his ego and telling him that the public wants a high-def music player. It all sounds good to Neil, who is apparently so insulated he defers to the technology people without paying attention to the business viability of a product that's past its prime.

Peculiar shape. But lossless is something I've wanted on my iPod since the first gen. I am very interested in this product. Always wanted Apple to turn the iPod Classic into a music playing tool for true audiophiles.

The snubbery for this product in this thread is incredible. Not everything has to be a huge seller. This is no doubt a niche product for a niche market. But it will most likely sell to that niche just fine.

Standing on the dock

Hey Neil, you see that thing in the water waaaaay out there, yes, that tiny little dot so far out that you can hardly see it? Well... that's the ship that's already sailed!

The only way this is gonna make a splash now, is if you chuck in the drink - is it waterproof?

Neil Young has "dabbled" in songwriting? Really?

Back on topic... Why this, Neil? Jeez!

I think the iPod Classic can store 160 GB of music in Apple Lossless and uncompressed.

Dire Straits...

Look at the display. Dire Straits and Dylan…
Dude, Dire Straits released Sultans of Swing in 1978. Even a remastered copy made from the original, noisy, analog recording is not going to sound any better on this PornoPlayer. Remastering also takes money. How much is a fair price to pay for an 35 year old album that people might already own on vinyl or CD?
If you are an audiophile, you probably have a very expensive system at home. Who's gonna plug this thing into a crappy stereo anyway?
What about the headphones? They are as important or more so than the player itself… $300 player, $10 headphones is not gonna cut it.
"DirePlayer" makes more sense…

Ms Juli Clover saying "Musician Neil Young, who has also dabbled in songwriting..." must not be of my generation. That's like saying Yo Yo Ma has dabbled in cello.

Audiophiles? that's like the dudes that still buy vinyl because it sounds better... No vinyl sounds different because it needs to be modified to fit the specs of vinyl, such as balance, stereo image, rms, compression etc. Otherwise the vinyl will not hold all the audio data presented at the cutting needle.

Audiophiles are clueless, they think audio should sound better on a system. When in reality flat, transparent systems actually make things sound less hyped and fantastic, you actually hear what is there in the music.

This thing is a fail in so many ways it's actually unreal that money is being ploughed into it.

The audio quality of most phones is thousands of times better than even a few years ago, the bottle neck in sound quality is the headphones only.
