After considerable searching across the web and also here on MacRumors I couldn't find where anyone had posted this answer, so I figured I would share.
Problem: When running VMWare Fusion 5 on a second monitor on my MacBook Pro (15" Retina Early 2013) the Menu Bar would not go away in spite of choosing "Hide Menu Bar in Full Screen" (note: selecting that option when using the laptop screen did cause the Menu Bar to disappear and become basically irretrievable - just used Command-Shift-M to get it back)
Solution: Select the option "Use All Displays in Full Screen" instead (don't even use "Hide Menu Bar in Full Screen")
