Apple Launches 8 GB iPhone 5c, Relaunches 16 GB iPad 4

As indicated by multiple reports yesterday, Apple has officially launched an 8 GB version of the iPhone 5c and relaunched a 16 GB version of the previously-discontinued fourth-generation iPad. The 8 GB iPhone 5c is currently being sold in Apple's European Online Stores for £429 unlocked in all of the existing color options, where it is £40 cheaper than the 16 GB model and is expected to become available in the U.S. later today. The 16 GB iPad 4 is available worldwide and retails in Apple's U.S. Online Store for $399, while customers may also purchase a cellular version for $130 more at $529.

The relaunch of the 16 GB iPad 4 has resulted in Apple discontinuing the three-year-old iPad 2, although the company's European stores still currently show the iPhone 4S being sold alongside the new 8 GB iPhone 5c.

Apple's iPhone 5c has seen lower-than-expected sales since its debut last September due to high demand for the flagship iPhone 5s. The move also comes amid a renewed push by Apple to promote the iPhone 5c, as the company has debuted a new set of playful dot-centric for the phone on popular blogging platform Tumblr as well as the front page of Yahoo.com and in recent issues of The New York Times.

Meanwhile, the iPad 4 has been brought back into Apple's lineup after being removed in favor of the iPad Air last October. However, KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicted in February that the company would shift from the iPad 2 to the iPad 4, as the latter sports Apple's A6X chip and 1GB memory compared to the former's A5 processor and 512 MB of memory.

Both devices are available to order from Apple's Online Store or through the company's retail locations.

now this is a very stupid decision apple.

The iPhone cannot work on on 8 GB will affect user experience and drive people away from maybe their first experience.

I think it's a really bad bad choice right now.

At least they didn't schedule an Apple Event to tell us about these changes!
Or waste time in the next event with these changes..


Now we're all set for new products please...

Sometimes people just want a really good performing phone that will take a few photos, store some music and make phone calls... Device capacity doesn't matter to everyone, so the iPhone 5c fits that perfectly.

Is the part number of the relaunched iPad exactly the same as the original 4th gen 16 GB iPad? There's an off chance it could be used as a test platform for TSMC's 20 nm process with a shrink of the A6X like how the iPad 2,4 was the test platform for Samsung's 32nm process with a shrink of the A5.

Rather silly decision, which may end up hurting the brand.

Kind of like an overpriced remainders store.

in a time where many of us are (were) naively purchasing technically outdated ipad mini 1 as well as i pad 2, retina laptops with just 4GB (!), just to save a few bucks, or laptops with almost the same performance as 3 (!) years ago, this is a move from apple that you could expect ... they are just following the demand.

today most apple's customers are not the "pro's" anymore but many customers do short-term decisions in favour to save a hundret dollars (forgetting about the fact that this will push them a lot earlier into a re-purchase for an updated device). apple is only reacting to this. i know there are STILL many pro's buying apple, like myself, but we are not the majority anymore.

well, everything has its price.

The iPad 4 at £329 is a ridiculously good deal.

It's still an absolute screamer, runs all the latest apps as on par with iPad Air and is the exact same performance wise on iOS 7.1 as the Air.

If you want the lighter body form then go for the Air but the 4 has lots of life left in it, the A6X is a great chip.

Among the many things that don't make sense about the iPhone 5C 8 GB is that it has a 1080p video camera, and unless you use a third party app, you can't decrease the resolution. Assuming you have apps and music on there as well (in addition to the space taken up by the OS), how many minutes of 1080p video could you take on an 8 GB phone before having to transfer it over to a computer? I don't know, but it's not much.

Let's face it: the 5c has been a failure and the pricing is laughable. A 8 GB version won't change that. Sheesh, even a low end USB stick offers more storage space.
