Atv over 3G

ATV3 works via iPhone hotspot, yes. ATV1 is long gone.

Only the current apple tv, aka ATV3, is still being made/sold by Apple.

I was able to use my ATV3 on my iPhone 4S hotspot. I had pretty good download speeds for a 4S of around 5mb/sec.

I've used it over both 3G and 4G connections - Netflix quality was awful over 3G, but everything else worked fine.

OP, are you not concerned about the cost of streaming everything over 3G? With tiers as they are, AT&T, Verizon, or whoever you use is going to LOVE you if you go this way. If you watch only a few movies/shows a month, you would probably find it cheaper to install wifi or even have someone tear open the walls to install ethernet cable and then reseal those walls, paint them, etc. Even that would probably be cheaper if you're thinking you'll go this way for a while (and watch even a modest amount of (streamed) movies/shows).
