I have a brother printer and have no issues scanning onto my PC when plugged in. I can't seem to figure out how to do it onto my mac..is this only a windows/PC feature?

Use Spotlight (CMD+Spacebar) to search for 'Image Capture’
the printer should show up in that list and will enable you to make scans.

First check to see if you can download drivers for the make of the scanner, then use image capture if you don't find it.

In my experience many current scanner makers are not producing apps for OSX scanning but letting consumers use the image capture app which is ok, but typically not has good as the provided apps. My Epson scanner went this route and I'm disappointed because the windows app that you can use is very powerful, the older OSX app the same thing but its not compatible with Mavericks so I need to Image Capture - sorry to gripe :/
