It is either having a hardware problem like a bad CPU or the Sophos software you have on it isn't working correctly.

can you elaborate why you think its CPU or sophos software?
i definitely see that CPU is possible:

Isn't it easier just to remove the Sophos software as a troubleshooting step and see if the machine stabilizes?

Scrolling down a few more lines, you see this:

Although not 100% certain, the unloaded kext can often be a culprit. Could be that it only needs to be updated, but removing the Sophos antivirus might be a better place to start … :) There's lots of threads demonstrating that antivirus solutions on OS X is not really worth the effort, and may often affect stability and performance.

Hi there,

In my experience, a good troubleshooting step for 2008 models is to reseat the RAM. I know it sounds like voodoo, but it has a knack for "fixing" mysterious problems (panics, ECC errors, boot trouble). Just pop each module out and back in (and maybe clean out any significant dust on the RAM risers, if there's any).

Since it's an intermittent problem, it may be a while before you'd know if it worked. But I'd definitely give it a try.

Hope this helps!

Great post! Worth a try. Done that several times on my MP 3.1. Resolved some RAM related issues in the past. Now as a standard routine housekeeping maintenance. Remove all RAM modules, give the risers a good clean and reseat them in random order (as mine are all the same). Every month I do that, keep it clean and mean. Also preventing dust to cause thermal issues.

Good luck to the OP!

~ Cheers
