5.5-Inch iPhone 6 May Cost an Extra $100, but Consumers Willing to Pay

Over the past several months, there have been several rumors suggesting that a move to two different screen sizes on the iPhone 6 could come with a $100 price premium for the larger model. Rumors have indicated that Apple is planning to launch a 4.7-inch iPhone 6 around the September timeframe, with an even larger 5.5-inch model coming either at the same time or up to several months later.

Raymond James analyst Tavis McCourt has now weighed in (via MarketWatch) with his own belief that the larger model will indeed include a $100 price premium. But according to McCourt's survey data, consumers are showing an increasing willingness to pay that premium for a larger device.
Quote:
"Our June consumer survey points to continued growth in the willingness of iPhone users to pay $100 more for a bigger screened iPhone, with now a full one-third of survey respondents willing to pay a $100 premium," he added.

In fact, he added, "data seems to suggest meaningful demand for a larger screen, which should logically mean the iPhone 6-cycle will be strong for upgrade sales, which combined with modest contribution from wearables should cause a modest acceleration in revenue growth in fiscal 2015."
Analysts and other observers unsurprisingly expect the iPhone 6 to generate a massive upgrade spike given the move to a larger screen size. The iPhone's usual two-year design cycle typically sees stronger anticipation for new designs, and the significantly larger screen sizes appear to be boosting that excitement even more this year.

If it fits right and looks right, I think I will go for it. Best of both worlds: big-screen with iOS.

This. In fact, 32GB should have been the standard for iPhones for a while now.

I guess our thumbs got longer over the last year.

I'm all for a bigger phone though.

No big deal for most Apple fans.

So, the pricing will be like this?

iPhone 5c: Free
iPhone 5s (8 GB): $99
iPhone 6 (4.7 inch, 16 GB): $199
iPhone 6 (5.5 inch, 32 GB): $299

all with 2-year contract.

I just can't believe Android and Microsoft phone manufactures would rip off Apple's 5.5" screen idea. I mean, have they no shame?

If Apple only announces and releases a 4.7" iPhone 6 initially, or even announces both a 4.7" and 5.5" iPhone 6 but delays the 5.5" iPhone 6, I wonder how many people will sit back and wait for the larger iPhone, just because they want to compare them in person before settling on one or the other?

I know I'll definitely want to try both out before settling on one or the other as being the replacement to my iPhone 4S for the next 2-4 years.

I think I'll stick to the 4.7". That seems the perfect size to me and I'll save $100.

Ditto. I think 5.5 is going to fail the "fits in my pocket comfortably" test. I'm not even sure the 4.7 will pass that one, honestly.

I really don't understand the desire for these gigantic phones... I wouldn't choose the 5.5in model if it was the same price much less pay a $100 premium for one.

People want to pay $100 more for a phablet they think Apple will be making. Their loss if they believe this. I'll personally hope Apple makes an iPhone 6 (and not an iPhablet 6). And if so I'll probably buy the iPhone 6.

Few people have thumbs long enough to hold and operate a phone that big one-handed. For some tasks, you'll need two hands.

On the other hand, many tasks will still be operable mono mano.

And perhaps developers will help by putting most commonly used controls within thumb's reach (with a configuration for RHD vs LHD).

That would be fine then IMO. It would practically just force people who want the bigger iPhone to get the higher amount of storage.

The 5.5" better have 32GB internal memory and a significantly larger battery that can outlast any phone on the market (possible if the battery is large enough since iOS is just more efficient than Android [p.s. I use android atm]).

I can live with a 100 dollar increase, provided it has adequate storage.

This falls under the category of "duh." When the Galaxy Note 2 with a 5.5" screen came out, it was $299 with a contract. I am still on the fence with the 5.5" screen. I had the Note 2 and I liked it (until I wanted to take a picture with one hand...I do that a lot at concerts). I think the 4.7" screen will be the best of both worlds.
I bet they will keep the 16 GB as standard. They seem to be making a huge cloud storage push which would make large amounts of local storage unnecessary (except for apps).

I don't think this supposed 5.5" iPhone will happen, but I wouldn't mind to be proven wrong.

We'll see...

Will definitely wait for the 5.5, even if it is delayed. 4.7 is still too small for me.

I hope they do release a phablet. I would find it useful.

If it disappoints you that they do, that will just be gravy.
