Apple 30" Cinema Display HDCP error?

That display was originally released in 2004. HDCP wasn't really very widely implemented at that time, so it's not surprising that such an old display might not be HDCP compliant.

So it sounds like using an Apple adapter (I have Thunderbolt to dual link DVI) between the 2013 Mac Pro and an older monitor will cause HDCP to prevent iTunes from showing movies. But why? I've searched Apple's knowledge base and not found anything mentioning this. (To the contrary, Apple says in several places that their monitor adapters are HDCP compatible.)

What monitors/adapters won't cause this error and how can I tell before buying a new one?

For what it's worth, I bought mine in January of 2007. My guess from available information is that it's not HDCP compliant, hence the error.

I contacted Apple tech support and they refunded the purchase price of the movie in question, but did not address the reason why it wouldn't play. I had told the tech exactly what monitor, computer and adapter, so they could've said, "Oh, that won't work," but they didn't. Curious.
