Can anyone explain this? I saw this post in a thread about the Mac Pro and monitors:

https://forums.macrumors.com/posts/18692006/

So it sounds like using an Apple adapter (I have Thunderbolt to dual link DVI) between the 2013 Mac Pro and an older monitor will cause HDCP to prevent iTunes from showing movies. But why? I've searched Apple's knowledge base and not found anything mentioning this. (To the contrary, Apple says in several places that their monitor adapters are HDCP compatible.)

What monitors/adapters won't cause this error and how can I tell before buying a new one?

Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions!

The adapter might indeed be HDCP compliant. The 30" Apple Cinema Display however, is not.

That display was originally released in 2004. HDCP wasn't really very widely implemented at that time, so it's not surprising that such an old display might not be HDCP compliant.

I'm not saying you are wrong about the 30" ACD but there were two version of the 30" made. First one in 2004 and a refreshed version in 2007.

Apple 30" Cinema Display Will Support HDCP if it was the latter revision

Looks like I was right. If you can check the serial number on your 30" Apple Cinema Display and make sure it was a mid 2007 (the refresh might have come in 2006, actually, I can't recall) the 30" WILL SUPPORT HDCP.

Thanks for replying, guys. Has anyone seen documentation from Apple about this? All I can find are forum posts and hearsay. Even the Wikipedia article for the Cinema Display doesn't mention HDCP or a 2006-7 era refresh.

For what it's worth, I bought mine in January of 2007. My guess from available information is that it's not HDCP compliant, hence the error.

I contacted Apple tech support and they refunded the purchase price of the movie in question, but did not address the reason why it wouldn't play. I had told the tech exactly what monitor, computer and adapter, so they could've said, "Oh, that won't work," but they didn't. Curious.

Everymac says the update came in mid 2006, so your monitor might have been part of that update.

Thanks again, California. I was hoping to find some kind of Apple documentation, but it looks like that's not out there. Bummed that I won't be able to play iTunes purchases on my 2013 Mac Pro until I buy a new monitor, that really sucks.

Thanks for your time and your help!
