Hi Everyone. I'm having a major issue and looking for advice:
I empty the trash and files the are being deleted but the space will not return until I do a secure empty trash. This is now always the case if my files are over 25 gigabytes. (Typically uncompressed .mov video files.) My main issue is that secure empty trash can take 24 hours to finish when 100 gigabytes has been lost, and this renders the computer useless until the process is complete.

Points to note:
1- Time machine has never been turned on and is currently off. (Never used it)
2- Mavericks was installed as a clean OS, not upgraded from previous OS.
3- Hard disk is partitioned into 2 x 256gig volumes.

The spec of the computer is below:
Mac Pro laptop with retina screen.
Processor 2.6 GHz Intel Core i7
Memory 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Graphics Intel HD Graphics 4000
Software OS X 10.9.4 (13E28)
Hard Disk of 512 SSD (partitioned into 2 x 256 drives)

Thanks in advance for any help.

Download and use OmniDiskSweeper. It will provide a sorted list of what's consuming your space.

Another option which is more comprehensive is to use this terminal command
sudo du -d 1 -x -c -g /

I prefer to redirect it to a text file (this puts it in your Documents folder
sudo du -d 1 -x -c -g / > ~/Documents/du.txt

This will show you where your data is being consumed.
