You cannot restore an iPad 2 to any other firmware but what Apple is signing.

True. Its just unfortunate they quit signing older firmware. Some older devices run better with their original firmware.

I never understood this ridiculous method by apple.

simple. they want users to buy new products... if they allowed us to run any iOS version we wanted to, there wouldn't have been many 5s's or iPad airs sold.

I would say it's rather quite questionale if that would have really been the case because of that.
