A small follow up. The second processor in this Power Mac failed last night, and since the Early 2005 systems require both processors to be present for the machine to power up, it's currently out of commission. I'm not sure whether it will be repaired, depends how difficult it is to find another Early 2005 2.0GHz processor (and yes, it has to be from the same year otherwise the machine won't POST).

I have the malfunctioning CPU out, and it appears to be a bad solder joint on the card somewhere toward the connector end, so I'll investigate repairing the existing processor card. Some other options include attempting to repair the U3 on the stock June 2004 Logic Board so I can slot in the factory 1.8GHz Dual CPUs, or installing a spare Single 1.8GHz logic board and processor I have sitting around.

Rather disappointing since it looked like it was going well for a while there.

That is really unfortunate... I was going to strip my G5 down and do all new paste, remove the PSU cover and blast the dust out and all that, but it is my daily work station and I don't really want to risk it too much.

Finally got around to taking a photo of my setup, not shown is the enormous subwoofer on the floor that goes with the harman/kardon speakers. They don't look as good as a set of Soundsticks, but they do sound just as good (and they were free!).

That's a nice array of Apple things! I'm convinced that the 20-inch iMac G4 is the most beautiful desktop computer ever designed. The Cube is not far away from it.

I find the 20" out of proportion to the base, much prefer the dimensions of the 17".

Anyone got a NeXTCube?

Thanks! I will be satisfied once I get: a Powerbook that has a floppy drive and can connect to the internet, and an Emac/Original Blue iMac.

I really want to do this to a spare 17" I've got lying around. Did you use a guide?

I'd like to hear your thoughts on how easy or hard you thought the conversion was.

There is a thread over HERE under "Insane Cultist" - that is mine. Another forum member over on Tonymac named Ersterhernd used the Dremel Junkie guide published a while back to do his conversions. The 20 inch is a bit more difficult than a 17 inch, but only because the 20 inch takes 24 volts and needs an up-converter. The display re-wiring was not super tough, but almost everyone who has done a 20 inch mod has come across artifacting issues at some point. For me, the issue was solved by removing all of the adapters from play, for Ersterhernd, he solved the issue buy using a NUC with HD 4K graphics when his HD 5K were artifacting. Check it out, mine is technically still in progress, as the NUC is still sitting on my desk and not mounted in the base of the iMac, but the computer is fully functional and the display is beautiful.

This is a temporary set-up to let me get a project done efficiently for an upcoming family reunion...the Quicksilver(left screen) is running a pair of scanners, the flatbed on the floor and the film scanner at the far right. I then dump the files via ethernet to the G5, where I can work on them with Photoshop.

And, here's my G4 DA in pretty much the same set-up before the PSU started getting flaky on me last weekend...

At one point, I was running dual 17" on the G4(I did this both on the DA and Quicksilver) but decided that a single 23" 1080p display not only looked better but was a more efficient use of the limited desktop space I have in this set-up.

On Sunday I finally bought a 12-inch PowerBook G4, my favourite Mac of all time. 1,33 GHz, 768 MB RAM, 60 GB HD, SuperDrive. AirPort and Bluetooth were standard in these. Running 10.4.11 which is somehow my favourite Mac OS X release too.

Back when I was looking to switch from Windows to Mac I had thought this was going to be the one I'll get, but the Intel transition came along and I ended up with a MacBook – the PowerBook never left my heart, though. I never stopped admiring its unique design and compactness.

I'm impressed how well this runs. Of course it won't do serious work that I use my MBP for, but for general light browsing and other things it's quite nice and I've hardly touched the MBP since I got home with this thing. And it's very quiet when the fan is not spinning.
