I noted the adapter only shows up in System Profiler under PCI cards. No entry under Thunderbolt or USB nor any devices attached to it. I also have a Seagate TB to SATA adapter and that shows up where expected. This is on a 2011 iMac. Odd.

It shows up on the Thunderbolt listing of my 2011 Imac.

USB3.0 or Thunderbolt JBoD

How about USB3.0 to eSATA adapter with Port Multiplier capable
Direct connection or USB3.0 hub with eSATA PM box
A single connection you can see up to 5 HDD
Only cost 30's. I bough it base on this review
Look at the actual user reviews:

It works - highly recommend it

Or you can use this Thunderbolt JBOD box if you need faster read/write.

What is the point of suggesting a USB3 adapter to people who need a device that *adds* USB3 to their machines.

The thunderbolt to USB3 adapter is primarily for people who have thunderbolt ports on their Mac but don't have USB3. A USB3>eSATA is useless to them.

hehhhe , you must be a little creative. i guess! lol

You run out USB3.0 port, may due to multiple USB3.0 drives
If you are using USB3.0 to eSATA adapter + eSATA Port Multiplier box /enclosure
Then a SINGLE usb3.0 you can connect up to 5x HDD - fully hot swap
This certainly would free you some USB ports

Or to enjoy the Thunderbolt bus bandwidth - using Thunderbolt JBOD box, move all your HDD to it. This also free some of you USB port
