Apple is once again expanding its Reno, Nevada data center, adding several new data cluster buildings, reports Reno Gazette Journal. The upcoming expansion was documented in building permits filed recently with Washoe County.

This new round of expansion is expected to kick off the third phase of development for the center that was approved in 2012 and went live in 2013. Apple currently is in the second phase of construction, which is expected to be completed by the end of this summer.
"They just keep plugging along," said Trevor Lloyd, senior planner for Washoe County. "Apple keeps submitting plans ... and it looks like they'll be expanding for a long time."
Apple's latest plans will boost the number of buildings on the site to nine, including eight data cluster buildings and an administration building, with plenty of room for further expansion on the 2,220-acre property.

As previously outlined by Wired, Apple's initial plans call for a cluster of eight small interconnected data buildings, which the recent building permits cover the completion of. A second facility of equal size is planned for future expansion.

Apple also is building a solar panel farm that will generate up to 18-20 megawatts of power for data center operations and will supplement the plant's current geothermal power.

While Apple improves its Reno data center operations, its proposal for a downtown facility has stalled, with Apple yet to submit building plans for a location in the Tessera District of Reno.
"I haven't heard anything and, as far as I know, no one in the city has heard anything," said Bill Thomas, assistant city manager for Reno. "I'm not saying we won't hear from them but it's been silence on their end (as of now)."
This downtown facility, which has been described as a "business and purchasing center", is part of Apple's original proposal and is required if the company is to receive up to $89 million in tax breaks on data center equipment over the next decade.

Apple stalling ... looking for a BETTER tax break ... that's typical MO for corporates, these days.

I'm guessing for 89 million, Apple will be proceeding with the downtown buildings as planned :)

I always enjoy readings these type of updates, they're a nice contrast to the analyst speculation and rumors.

This is great. They need more DC capacity especially with all the resources they are giving developers now for apps.

I lost some respect for Elon Musk after Tesla announced it's shopping for $500M in subsidies or tax breaks. But it's hard to blame him when his competitors are doing it and his company is barely profitable.

It's all facilitated by bureaucrats and politicians who liked to be wined and dined of course, and a media and electorate that turn a blind eye.

I find it hard to loose respect for an innovative most successful electric American car company in history! Looking to buy a Model S! Sexy!

That guy would never get a job as an analyst, too honest.

Why does Reno always look like nothing is there? Every pic, and even when I've driven through it...nothing but dust.

Reno is like a desert. I used to live there for few years. Reno should be happy that Apple is there bringing some jobs in for the economy. I'm sure there is a reason why Apple is waiting to move into downtown Reno, and Apple being Apple, they likely will not comment on the reason.

Agee. My son goes to UNR, and there is nothing really there. Been a couple times. The airport updates look nice, but there is really nothing else there. The little strip, a couple other casino "resorts" and land. Not a ton of jobs, either, from what my son tells me.

I believe it is a bit of an assumption that Apple is trying to get breaks here. There could be a number of reasons for the silence including considering the site outside of town or simply placing management in an entirely different area.

Well that is a problem but unfortunately you have to work with these sorts if you want to get anywhere in the business world. I've seen all sorts of projects delayed, canceled or moved elsewhere because a developer didn't want to kiss ass for no good reason.

Probably because the reasons that made sense during the last century don't make sense anymore. There use to be value in having a business location in a city but that value is not there anymore, you actually have more disadvantages than advantages to locating in a city. This is why we have seen a rise in the suburbs, simple things like parking and freedom from the social life than seems to be required in big cities are a big win for companies and their employees. Especially a city like Reno that seems to have something going on every other week to bring in tourists.

A lot of companies have wised up and have sworn off trying to locate in City centers. Instead they look for positive work environments.

All of Nevada is in tuff straits due to high unemployment. It is no wonder that Nevada and Cities like Reno are enticing the likes of Apple to come to the state. Reno is actually a nice location for a business, Lake Tahoo isn't far away at all so you have a variety of entertainment / recreational possibilities. However Neveda has this reputation as being one big desert which it is for a good part of the state, so people at times just dismiss the place.

I was in Reno about a month ago for the USA Karate National Championships. And while I agree that the area is otherwise rather bleak, I had dinner at four different downtown restaurants during my stay, and all of them were outstanding.

One was Thai, another Indian, and the others Asian fusion and Italian. Each was family owned and operated (not part of a chain), and — best of all — none were located inside a casino. They were honest-to-goodness full-service, friendly, clean, standalone restaurants. All were reasonably priced, too.

Those were the four best meals I had during my entire six-week, six-city stay in the United States. (Admittedly, I also had a couple of fantastic meals in Denver, too.)

Why? Because of the amount of sunshine and clear days to run solar panels. It's high desert and cools off at night, even in summer.
