Just picked up 1TB 840 EVO for my mid 2010 MBP and Mavericks. In case anyone is interested, speeds are roughly 250MB/SEC each way. Slower then I hoped, but maybe its older controller?

Anyway, I just want to say that I am enjoying the performance but I am having some problems with Sleep on the MBP. When I wake it from sleep, Apple Mail has to be restarted, and this leads me to wonder if the entire OS is at risk in some way when being put to sleep.

What is the reccomended mode of operation for this drive in terms of sleep or hibernate on OSX?

That is exactly what it is. Your MBP has the older SATA II 3Gbps connector and not the SATA III 6Gbps connector of the newer models, so that will limit your speeds.

There is no need to change anything from the default sleep/hibernate settings with an SSD. Sounds like you have something else going on there.

Slow after upgrade

Just bought a 1TB 840 Evo and I'm only getting around 250 or so read and write. I've read that it's slower controllers, but anyway to get a bit more out of it?

I have my Samsung 840 EVO 1TB SSD in an external Thunderbolt enclosure on a 2012 iMac and get these results (don't have a MacbookPro to try):

Samsung 840EVO 2TB (Raid0)

A bit off topic. Here's mine, RAID0 Samsung 840EVO (2TB) inside my Mid 2011 27" iMac. :D

Looks great, may know which enclosure you're using for 840 EVO 1TB SSD? Thanks :)

Hey guys,

These are definitely not normal results aren't they?? Is my SSD faulty?

Read speeds jump maybe to 190MB and write to 50MB max.

I have the MacBook Pro 13 (mid 2012), i5 2.5GHz, DDR3 4GB and a Samsung 840 250GB SSD.

//Edit:

Just transferring from my mac to USB3, speeds are little bit better when it comes to write speeds but I'm still worried about that blackmagic benchmark.

Ok so I just installed a samsung 840 250gb ssd in my main bay in my early 2011 15-inch MacBook Pro. I ordered a owc opitical drive replacement bay for my stock 750gb hdd. But now I'm thinking about a second samsung ssd instead. I would run this as a raid 0. I'm thinking instead of a 1tb fusion with a slow 5400rpm hdd and ssd. It would be beast mode with 2 ssd in raid 0. Has anyone tried this set up with any luck. Would trim be a issue or can trim enabler handle a raid 0? Any thoughts suggestions? I run all my stuff externally then move files I need to main hdd as I'm working. Hd video editing on final cut. Then when done store externally so 500gb would be more than enough.

1.5 years later of heavy daily use still running about 450 write 515 read on my 256GB 840 Pro. Best drive choice I could have made.

5 posts above yours, except it be an iMac.

Reboot and make sure you aren't doing anything with the drive, and that you are actually testing that drive.

Did that. Pretty much same results.

Did the copy/paste test from - to my SSD. It was a .mp4 1760MB file which finished in 73 seconds. If i did my math right thats approx. 24MB/s?

Alos found out that the TRIM support is disabled which is important for SSDs. How do i enable that?

Anyone know of any issues installing a Samsung 840 EVO 1TB drive in the main bay on a 2012 Macbook pro?

I've currently got a 256GB 830 model installed, which has been faultless and will be replaced by the 840, are they comparable?

The EVO should work just fine in that machine. The 840 Pro is actually the more direct replacement for the 830 as it uses MLC NAND chips. The more "consumer" oriented EVO uses a TLC NAND chip that is not rated for as many write cycles, but under normal usage will still likely outlast your computer. Give this a read.

Also take a look at the new Crucial MX100. Very good bang for the buck.

I would grab whichever of those two you can get the best price on.

Hi, I have an 840Pro in a 2008 MBP. It has been there for 18 months but I am starting to get beach balls. Getting sub 100 writes and 135 reads. Any ideas?
My optical drive is dead, has anybody had any luck getting magician working on a usb stick yet? Any advice on wiping the disk and if so, what is the process without an optical drive?

I got the August 2013 840EVO 1TB. I have 3 now. They're quick! I'm using them in SATA so they're not even doing what they're capable of, but are still quick and reliable.

How much capacity does your drive have, and how much free space do you have? I don't know if this advice changed with newer SSDs, but it used to be said that if you didn't have 10-15% of disk space free on the drive then you were likely to experience hits to performance.

Regarding wiping the drive, what OS are you running? As of OS X 10.7.2, I believe it was, you could boot from a Time Machine volume. Apple also made 10.7 and 10.8 "recovery partitions" that could be installed to USB drives. Boot from either of those, run Disk Utility to format the SSD (just erase; don't use any "secure erase" features with SSDs due to the amount of wear they generate), and then reinstall OS X to it.

Edit: If you're talking about wanting to use Magician to update the drive's firmware, then I'm not sure that there's a solution that doesn't involve optical discs on OS X...
