Looks more like a software bug over a GPU issue. True reinstalling the OS (or just wait until Yosemite comes and and see if it works when you upgrade). If you have just bought it then return it, else to either reformat or wait for Yosemite.

It looks like the grey square is the size of a non retina MBP so I think thee is some sort of issue with the OS determining what hardware you are using.

Do you have FileVault turned on? If so, go to Preferences -> Security and Privacy -> FileVault, then click the lock, enter your password and click the "Enable users" button. you're going to need to uncheck then re-check your username to update the EFI so your passwords match up, and the volume unlocks with just one login.

In doing the EFI privileges update, it *might* also fix your display issue.
