The netkas kext driver patches you are looking for to enable QuartzExtreme and CoreImage acceleration for exotic non-supported 48xx/49xx cards has been maintained by the "Hackintosh" community for newer OS X versions. Google "QE CI exotic" along with the OS X version number (like 10.8.5) and you will easily find it so you can enable graphics acceleration.

You will need to re-patch with every OS X revision update, a minor hassle.

Thank you. I'm using HD5870 from Apple in my normal usage, but friend asked me to flash his HD4870. In this case he would just sell this card as normal PC card and replace it with something else.

I'd like to report another success story. Thanks to everyone especially Rominator, rew, rhildinger, netkas, pipomolo42!

I still had some troubles in the process and documented all that I did.

I have created a tutorial with lots of pictures and instructions. I hope this helps people:

Help with Sapphire 870

If 666sheep is still out there, I could really use your help in modifying the firmware for my card. I used Zeus initially, and already bricked the card once. I restored it, and tried using pipomolo42's instructions, but have errors. I would really like to avoid bricking it again, so help would be greatly appreciated. I've attached the ROM that I used to restore the card.

Thanks in advance!

Thank You 666sheep

I had to wait until today to try it at work in case I needed to re-flash again with a PC, but that worked perfectly. Thank you so much!!!

Hi, I am trying to add EFI to a sapphire 4870 using Zeus but I keep getting an error. I have an sapphire 4870 1GB
p/n:102-b50702-10-at
sku: 21133-04

I've been looking around the net and found this thread, didn't do my research (my bad) and flash my card with a wrong ROM. What I get now is a boot screen, however it looks like the matrix and then it goes to a blue screen after the boot is complete.

I've tried to flash my card back to its original state but haven't had much luck. I've been having issues finding a computer that will allow me to install the card as a secondary card. I was able to flash it but I don't think enough power got to the card, because I am still getting the weird matrix screen. Yesterday I had a computer that I was able to use, but when I loaded the ROM it said that the ROM was current and canceled the flash. Can someone help me out and add EFI to the ROM posted and/or lend advice on how to force the ROM to install?

Continous fan and black screen

I purchased a flashed 4870 from a eBayer who reported that it worked in his Mac Pro setup. (Don't have his set-up details though).

My setup is Lion on a Mac Pro 1,1 with 2G RAM. When I installed the 4870 in slot 1 and booted up, the Mac started up with a fan at high RPM and a black screen. I didn't get any further than this.

My Mac sees the card properly and seems to have the right ROM and EFI as nuxx.net's post-flash profile https://nuxx.net/blog/2009/10/05/ati-radeon-4870-flashed-for-mac-pro-macpro11/. See below. (Card is in slot 2 so I could grab this).

Chipset Model: ATI Radeon HD 4870
Type: GPU
Bus: PCIe
Slot: Slot-2
PCIe Lane Width: x1
VRAM (Total): 512 MB
Vendor: ATI (0x1002)
Device ID: 0x9440
Revision ID: 0x0000
ROM Revision: 113-B7710C-176
EFI Driver Version: 01.00.318

Any suggestions for what I should check or install? I'm not sure if I want to try to re-flash. (I have no way of reloading the PC ROM if that's required).

Thanks.

VGA display?

Thanks for your reply.

Sorry, should have provided more info. I'm running a 17" Apple Studio Display.

Additional info: System Profiler only "sees" the card when one or both the power cables are not attached. When it's in slot 2 (so that I can profile it) and connected to power, the fan runs continuously (as when it was in slot 1 and I booted with that card feeding the display) and the System Profiler does not even see the card.

Reflash the card with original PC BIOS under DOS.

Are you still here to help? I'll paypal you a beer, pm me info.

Should I update BIOS first, or inject EFI into the current version? EDIT: Couldn't find any BIOS update anyway...

Zeus only listed 1GB. I have a 512MB Asus HD4870. Zeus gave me "Rom not compatible with script. EFI must be added manually." I read earlier that Asus cards were tricky because of added padding, I'm not certain I could handle this myself, don't want to brick it.
