Instead of debating whether or not it is useful, how about someone answer the OP's question. Bottom line, yes you can use a mouse with the iPad and here is how you do it: http://youtu.be/5BEVZjjdpGo

You will need to jailbreak your iPad before this will work and if you have updated to iOS 7.1 you will not be able to do so, yet. Once a jailbreak release for iOS 7.1 is available you can.

And look what happened to him...

Was this really necessary? Don't be a douche.

Not having the ability to add mouse is another one of those shortsightedness of Jobs. When iPhone first came out there was no provision for native apps. It was supposed to be web apps. The jailbreak market drove the decision for Apple to allow native apps. Second, he said no stylus. As an artist, that was extremely shortsighted, as well. Drawing with your finger does not have the ergonomic interaction as with brush, pencil or pen. Third, one of the things I have been trying to do with a tablet is to use a VNC program to run some apps on my computer over wifi/internet that need 3 button mouse control. If I could pair up a mouse with the iPad, this would be simple. Now, I am trying to decide if I can write a mouse control app for my iPad to do this. It would have been simpler if Apple allowed this. Again, shortsightedness.

BT iOS devices to replace need for laptop

As demonstrated in this video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D4owCYJX86c

This would cut out my need to take a laptop just to go sit and write somewhere. A roll-up BT keyboard and micro-sized mouse to put in your jacket pocket would be nice. This dock is a little clunky but I dig the idea.
