What has that go to do with anything? I didn't say that America hasn't done anything in the last 100 years. Although other counties have done many notable things too. You have to remember that America is very large, so breakthroughs are statistically more likely. If you compare what America has done to one other country then the America list would be longer, naturally; as it's a bigger place. My comment was a joke. I did not say America has done nothing. I did not say America inventions have changed my life in many ways (though not just America inventions have changed the world today). America is the only country where people talk about freedom as their god-given-right. Many countries have the same, if not more, 'freedom' than America, yet they do not talk about it.

Stop being so defensive. Have a joke.

I see what you are saying now. Apologies for the defensive nature. And yes, you are right about many countries having more liberties than the US. I have lived in a couple of them.

I would pay cash at a drive through. Apple Pay seems to be more about flashing some new tech about than being something of actual benefit.
"Hey, watch me pay for this with my new iPhone. I bet you can't do this with your phone."

>>>>>>> meh.
I avoid paying cash a fast food places or gas stations for a pretty good reason.

Fast Food and Gas Stations have the grossest bills out there

Have you ever seen the amount of "multitasking" these cashiers are expected to do? They handle orders over the mic, clean their stations, prep drinks (including sloppy caramel McCafe's) and then take your filthy money. So the bills that you get are often gross.

Claiming that paying through your Phone is some sort of "bragging" is ridiculous. Its not showing off, its a convenience. I'm all for Apple Pay because stores tend to not touch your phone for liability reasons so you don't have any physical interaction with anyone. Just tap and go.

Yes but until the system is accepted at 100% of outlets, you're still going to have to use cash and cards on a frequent basis. All those notes that pass through MacDonalds end up in general circulation you know. Bank notes and coins harbour faeces, urine and other germs...

Just go to Europe and wait to have your mind blown by mobile terminals.

The drive through person just hands you one of these, except with a long cable so you don't steal it.

Okay, ya got me there. I occasionally have hankerings for a sausage, egg, and cheese McMuffin for breakfast and the very occasional McNuggets. :D

I haven't had one for ages but used to do a job which involved me passing a MacDees at some unGodly hour of the morning....and a double sausage McMuffin + Tropicana orange juice was my regular order. Mmm.
*Mind you, I'm 12lbs lighter these days :)

I remember those early mornings driving a truck in a previous job.

And as for passing McDonald's, I usually had to take a laxative.

Hehe. The regular daytime menu appeals but I never got along with it. I found myself temporarily stuffed and with awful indigestion & bloating, then an hour later I was hungry again. Plus the burgers were never as nice as you wanted them to be. No such problems with the double sausage McMuffin on a morning though, that circle of egg, double sausage patty and a slice of cheese arrangement really hit the spot.
Cripes I want one now!

Most the ones I have walked into in the past year have the same terminal that looks exactly like the one in the photo. It's similar to one that either CVS or Walgreens has with the NFC-enabled hardware. So yeah, most of these stores will already support it.

I can't imagine this is what McDonald's does most of the time. This looks completely stupid. I would imagine it would be a different device developed for a drive-thru. I'm hoping Starbucks does something like that.

On a side note, when at Target today I noticed that their new systems are made for chip and pin cards and don't seem to have any NFC features. That sucks because Target JUST replaced all of these POS terminals this year, meaning it's highly unlikely they would be changed again so soon.
Target uses the Verifone Mx915, it has NFC, it's under the screen. My local grocery store has them, but unlike target, it shows the symbol when it's ready to take a payment, just tap the card to the screen. (Like Europe)...has Chip and Pin too

Those same ones are used at small shops and O'Reilly Auto Parts here in the US. Chase Paymenttech also issues those Ingenicos to merchants.

The terminal in US McDonalds is designed for a grocery store (MX825??), but McD's decided to use it for a drive through.

No wonder you're such a grump! :D

Frankly, they should make it even more silly-looking. It's a newer technology, so the ease of use isn't quite there yet. Give it some time and it'll be a really streamlined way of doing business. I'm weirded out by advancements in technology like this but it is what it is.

Oh thank goodness. That's where I use credit cards in stores mostly, so I'm hoping Target makes its cards usable via that system. It hasn't sent out new chip and pin cards yet, so I'm hoping there will be a big unveil of both in the coming months.

I kind of hope Starbucks adapts this soon, but the present payment method isn't bad. I don't have to carry my card, so we good.

These are in Canada too. I'm not sure why they would put that terminal outside the window in the first picture except make it look ridiculous. It's obvious the terminal in the photo is a fixed terminal for in store use(it's supposed to sit in front of the cash register and doesn't move).

Yes, last I heard Target is waiting on updated Register software from Retalix (a division of NCR) in order to process Chip card (and possibly NFC) payments. They're still on the old software for now until 2015.

With the new software they're also supposed to get iPods as handhelds and iPads as price verifiers (so,e stores already have this), and also self checkout will finally come to Target. (New software will support Self checkout as well, which will be nice)

Am I the only one who prefers to use a credit card? It's very quick to pay .. Rarely ever fails. ... And fraud is a non issue since the banks cover it. So what's the need for NFC other than to avoid carrying around a credit card?

NCR's headquarters is down the street. Want me to go in and tell them to hurry up?
