Bumper case vs Apple's cases

I'm considering a case for the first time after using my iPhone a few days and having some near slips. I mainly just want to make the phone less slippery so I don't drop it. I want to keep the phone as light and thin as possible. I know the apple cases are getting good reviews but has anyone tried any of the bumper cases out now? It seems like when I hold the phone it's really the edges that need the grip, my hand never really makes contact with the flat back of the phone so I see no need to have the whole backside covered, seems like unnecessary thickness. Just curious what you think and if anyone has compared the two styles of cases.
