Ok to start I have a 2010 MBP the dreaded 2.6 defective family.

Now what's happening is all of a sudden my screen went black then came back on but now its nothing but thick 1 inch vertical lines of color.

Ran Apple Hardware Test with the system hooked up to a external monitor and it says it detects no issues at all. So any suggestion which direction I should look. It says there is no hardware issue it can detect so I am thinking it could be the video cable or the screen itself.

What nags at the back of my mind though is the fact this is a defective model year and perhaps the defect that had been under free repair for 3 years has shown up again

it works to an external

If it works to an external tehn it seems that your logic board and GPU are fine so connection does seem most likely take it to apple and see if they can fix it.
