Hello All, I haven't posted on macrumors in quite some time as I am also generally a lurker (when I have the time) who enjoys this community, especially when it's near time for new Apple product releases. This year would be my first iPhone ever depending on if Apple released a larger screen size. I was also going to switch carriers from T-Mobile to Verizon regardless.
I knew of the lines on launch day and even the online pre-orders. However, I knew I needed to see the phones in person before purchasing. So I skipped the pre-order time and hoped to get a phone at Verizon on launch day. I thought being #13 in line would have assured me my choice of phone. In the store while waiting, I determined the 6+ would be the way for me to go. Needless to say, Verizon didn't get many, if any, 6+ Space Gray 64GB. There were no 6+ whatsoever except for gold, here and there and those were gone. (I was kind of ticked that I wasted my time when I asked specifically if there was enough stock given my place in line and was told, yes, by two different employees.)
Anyway, I ended up ordering over the phone on launch day and the expected ship date was 10/31! Couldn't do Apple because they did not offer the single line plan that I wanted and Edge had to be done in store also. No pre-order for pickup in store for me with Apple and Verizon stores basically told me that they weren't getting anymore phones until the backlog of pre-orders were filled, 3-4 weeks at best. Ugh!!
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU to whomever posted about idevicechecker! I had gone to Best Buy this past weekend looking at the phones and I discovered that they could do any plans and options that Verizon offered, so it was just a matter of them getting stock. They had not received their Verizon stock at all since launch, so it was a matter of time. I was checking another inventory site that was posted (can't remember the name, but it was wrong a lot), so I missed when stock came out mid-week at BB.
Yesterday, I was off and saw that stock was available in 3 BB's all 2 hours away. There was stock in other colors locally, so I checked those first and they all stated that they didn't have what I wanted. I debated about the drive, but called the stores anyway. 2 of the 3 said they didn't have stock, but these people didn't even bother to send me to the Mobile department, so I couldn't be sure. The last store said emphatically yes, they had stock, but "only a few left".
Since it was midday, I took the drive from Chicago to Kalamazoo, MI and got my phone. I called an hour into the drive to make sure they still had phones (I witnessed a woman buy 3 Sprint iPhone 6+ earlier! so I knew inventory could get zapped in one buy) and again 20 minutes before getting there so I could cancel my Verizon pre-order. The BB employee who helped me was awesome. My number was ported over and working before we were done, plus she moved my contacts and photos from my Samsung Galaxy S3 to the new phone.
I'm glad I did it and I am so glad I held out for the Space Grey. I love the black front, especially with my red leather case. Two hours is nothing to me since I can spend an hour getting to work some days and I take regular road trips to visit family in other areas of the state and St. Louis. When I made it back I went direct to my nearest Apple Store and got Apple Care.
Long story, yes, but my whole point was that I found the idevicechecker site (while still not perfect) to work for me and my situation since I couldn't go Apple and I thank the informative poster and the site owner. No more waiting until the end of October for me. This morning, I checked idevicechecker and still no stock locally for the Verizon SG 64GB 6+ and the BB I went to yesterday is now sold out.
Definitely don't rule out Best Buy. They seem to get stock in randomly. Apparently Sprint customers were having a hard time finding phones and BB had those in stock about the same time as the Verizon phones. There were also gold 6+ Verizon phones at the BB's in the South Loop and out in Downers Grove on Butterfield Rd - not sure about today though.
Good luck to everyone and thanks again!
