Thinking of the camera ring

Of late, I've been just covering my devices with a skin, but for my 6, I ordered a case partly because of the protruding camera ring. I envision a naked 6/6+ rocking around on that ring as it sits on and scratches the finish on my table and desk.

You would have to be such a stupid sucker to by an iPhone case for $45 plus tax when it doesn't even have a battery or something special

You mean the same kind of sucker that pays $650+ for a phone consisting of only $250 in components? There's always a markup. Companies have to pay for other costs, and also make a profit. If there were a clearly better deal out there, we'd all take it. Unfortunately, you usually have to pay a premium to get quality.

EDIT: Okay, I'll hold my uninformed opinion until I try it out. Thanks everyone.

People and their uninformed opinions. SMFH.

Even an entry level DSLR with low megapixels with a fast lens will always beat out any high MP smartphone, and twice and then some on Sunday.

I have a Canon 7D and my go to lens is the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8. No smartphone out now or in the near future will ever take better pics, NOT even the Nokia Lumia 1020 with it's 41 megapixel camera.

People always buying only into the specs because that's what manufacturers like Samsung always like to brag about.

Same thing happened with the Gigahertz war a few years back with AMD vs Intel processors. Clock speeds reached 4Ghz for processors and that was Intels bragging rights, then we had a reset with multicore processors and clock speeds dropped. Higher/Bigger numbers don't necessarily mean better performance in and of itself.

Not convinced about this iPhone at all. The biggest disappointment is camera…..still 8MP and 1080 video?!?!? I am not photos specialist but pixel is pixel. If I want to make pictures for my family and crop it after that…well 8MP won’t help me much. It has been like 4 generations iPhones with the same camera!!! Not mention waterproof capabilities etc. Apple not even doing catching up anymore.
I am sick and tired of Apple counting on us being loyal

At the risk of repeating what countless others will try to explain to you, let me give this a go...

First of all, I get where you're coming from. You'd like to have a higher resolution camera to allow you more wiggle room to crop your photos. More resolution is nice.

However, the part you're missing - and the reason why Apple seems to take their time in increasing the resolution on the iPhone's camera - is that there are tradeoffs involved when increasing the resolution of an image sensor, especially when doing so in a very small device.

The camera's sensor is made up of pixels (think of them as tiny little eyes) that combined gather the light received from your subject to record an image. If you take a particular sensor and cram in more pixels without making the sensor larger, each pixel will be smaller. The problem is twofold: 1) very small pixels are less efficient at gathering light and 2) forcing tiny pixels closer together produces undesirable effects that reduce the quality of your photos.

Two other drawbacks that are arguably less critical are that higher resolution cameras use more battery power and the images they capture take up more storage space - two qualities that present challenges for devices with limited battery life and storage space.

Now, if Apple had increased the iPhone 6's camera from 8MP to, say, 16MP, you are correct that your images would have more resolution and you would be able to crop them more. That would be the sole benefit. And when taking photos in bright, sunny conditions you probably wouldn't notice anything wrong with them.

Now the downsides: Your iPhone would perform dramatically worse when taking photos in anything less than very bright light. Your photos would appear darker, they would be noisier (grainy), they would have less dynamic range (reduced range of darkness to brightness that is properly exposed in a single image), and you would have more chromatic aberrations ("bleeding" of light from bright to dark areas.) All of this, on top of reduced battery life and photos hogging more of your storage space on your camera, for a benefit that most people don't need most of the time since an 8MP image (uncropped) is more than enough for viewing and printing.

Are there ways around these limitations? Yes. You can make the sensor larger, but this generally requires having a larger lens that is farther away from the sensor, so that's usually not going to fly on an iPhone. Additionally, as technology advances, sensors are becoming more sophisticated and over the last several years there have been enormous improvements to the quality and resolution we can get from smaller and smaller sensors - but this progress is comparatively slow, and is not sufficient to allow for resolution increases in tiny sensors year after year.

So as with all other things, there are tradeoffs involved and Apple will always make choices that they feel make the most sense and will produce the best photos, rather than the choices that sound good on a spec sheet and satisfy uninformed customers who don't know any better.

I got mine today; leather product RED for the iPhone 6 plus. I have a red leather one for my 5S and it has aged nicely. Hope to get the same excellent wear out of the new one.

At first I was astonished at how BIG the phone would be to fit the case. But I found it would fit in my shirt pocket comfortably, though it sticks up an inch higher than the 5S does. Since that's where I carry the 5S, I can continue to do so when the new phone comes in November.

Looking forward to putting phone and case together!

Which is essentially a $99 case + $79 deductible if something goes wrong. Doesn't protect against scratches and scuffs and when they do happen you have to decide if those scratches are worth $79 and a refurbished phone that could be more trouble than it's worth.

Give me a case for $40 that can protect my phone out in the wild and can be removed in controlled environments to enjoy the phone caseless. To each his own.

I know exactly what it is. But don't act like nothing can happen even if you have a case on.

I hate cases. I have usually gone without applecare for the most part, but this time I want a piece of mind.

Where I live
If there truely is no rush, I would strongly suggest waiting a couple more days and viewing the sizes in hand for yourself. That's what I would have done but... I'm impatient :p So 6+ for me. I figure I can always sell it if it's too big!

It is reserved at my carrier, but I really doubt I will get it on launch day (wasn't expecting it). I have some friends that did pre-order it and I can give it a try and cancel my reservation.

Considering how many amazing cameras are available across a HUGE wealth of devices, I am going to say that it's a very very poor show that this person couldn't be bothered to take better photos.

Macrumors, using these crummy photos for a "news" article is ridiculous - there were better photos for the LEAKS! "Good photos"? Were you drunk, when writing this article?

Black or Red Leather Case?

6Case.jpg

Which would be better overall, the black or red leather case?

Not just in appearance, but wear and discoloration and all that. Does the red leather really wear as terribly as many people say? Which case would you personally buy?

And, if I'm going for durability and protection, should I even consider the silicone cases, or are they really flimsy?

Thanks so much!

I need one before my 6 Plus comes tomorrow. Protection is a no brainer for me, had them on all phones..but the question now is how is the grip on these, Give you a better "sticky but not so sticky feel" - better handling of the phone. If anyone has experience with the silicone, is that a better option?

Thanks! :)

----------

This past Sunday an AT&T Store I went to already had a rack of iPhone 6 and 6 Plus cases (they were unmarked as to what phone but it was easy to tell from the buttons and ports.) I took a look at a Pelican case to get a feel for the iPhone 6 Plus that I should be getting this Friday.

I did see this at ATT also, $60 it was listed. I don't know. How does it feel on the phone?

I know this is an old topic.
but all the iphones I've had have used apple cases if they were available.

And i've gotten them replaced by Apple for free several times because my phone was under applecare.

I would go in, explain how the case is cracking/splitting/falling apart. And they would just give me a new one.

I don't think its "officially" a covered part of AppleCare, but my store always has taken good care of me!
