They're ugly as crap. I got a case and never have to look at those things again. Jobs would never have allowed that. Just make them the same color Apple.
Ok. First i hated the band when it leaked. Now it looks a little bit better in person after i got my 6. It's still bad, but not as bad as before i saw it in person.
Like jony ive said, design is not something it looks, but how it functions well means good design too.
Usually when im on my garden, i lost my wifi signal, now it has 1-2 bars so i can use internet when i sit in my garden. So thats not bad. Couple of days using the phone, i realized all i see is the front panel anyway
What?
Function and design historically are not directly related, sometimes they do overlap like for example the protruding camera lens. But in terms of the bands, if other phone manufacturers are not showing it in such a thick way then Apple has lost out. And on top, Apple's design is based on minimalism and simplicity where as these bands are visually loud and distracting. My point is no other Apple product has thick bands, the opposite in fact most Apple products have nothing.
Design is often seen as a completely different to the functional side of things. Car manufacturers spend literally millions on designing the car, bmw for example have had similar engines in a lot of their cars for a few years but recently the exteriors of all their models are going through extreme changes.
Car designers are paid so much money to come up with designs which maybe could show certain characteristics like elegance or aggression. You may think design is a simple thing which does not take time, but believe me in all industries.
Which comes to even more of a shock as Apple are a heavily design influenced company. My primary reason for iphone is iOS but many, maybe less technology informed consumers, purchase iphone for the looks first.
The argument that it is needed for the function is not valid because the competitor devices do not have the lines, and the ones that do like the htc m8 do it in a sleeker manner, thinner black lines as opposed to the thick large bands on iphone.
Other than the bands, and perhaps now in 2014 the thick bezels are slowly becoming a bigger issue as competitor devices again do not have them, apart from them 2, the iphone 6 like other iphones have excellent build quality, are sleek, continue the successful Apple philosophy of thin is better - and I like that. The product otherwise is sleek and as I would have desired, apart from the bands.
Where's the "I don't really care" option? They don't really add nor reduce the design and Apple was smart to make it at least blend in a little.
People were quick to brush off this issue saying we are going to love it after it comes out.
No.
Pretty much every person who reviews the iphone 6 mentions it saying it just does not look pleasing.
Design is important for me. And now thats it out and im holding it, it just looks horrible. The lines are thick, and gives a toy like look, very amateurish. Me and many many others have voiced concerns.
It just looks tacky. No other apple product has this kind of uneven incoherent design. In fact most apple products have this plain, simplistic minimalistic design where as these iphones we have now have a busy design, the look seems interrupted and broken.
The lines suggest a deformation and lack of consistency. Seriously what were they thinking? It is otherwise a very sleek and well built (the bending issue aside because I consider that an anomaly, a minor initial production issue which will certainly be fixed).
Before anyone says but we need the technology. Of course we need the bands for all the wireless specifications. But other phones have similar features but dont look that bad from the back, just look:

No. I rarely look at the back of my phone
Well. I agreed. Thick bands in htc one m8 is sleeker. I got one myself. Only hate it being too tall for a phone.
Nobody seemed to mind the 3GS having a plastic back...
This.
My phone is not a fashion statement.
Actually, a number of us coming from the original iPhone complained that it felt lightweightly cheap and plasticky, along with poor fit and finish. Those who got the 3G/3GS as their first iPhone (especially in droves once subsidized) had nothing to compare it to.
I think Jony Ives may disagree![]()
