I received a replacement iPhone 5 from Apple six weeks ago and despite me always babying my devices I picked up a long scratch just like that within two weeks.
For that reason I've put a screen protector on my six plus.
I've never used screen protectors but I'm impressed by how nine intrusive they are. I managed to apply it with no bubbles, the only problem is that protector is about three millimeters too narrow and a slice of the screen is unprotected. I do have some more due to arrive soon.

This is a really big scratch you have there but unprotected smartphone displays will always scratch, even the ceramic cooking plates have scratches after time. Sapphire would be better but its not as drop resistant, i have a watch with sapphire glas both on the bottom and top, its great and that would be the only reason not to put a display protector on because i would look foolish with a sapphire screen and a display protection foil on it. But as long the iphones use this unreliable gorilla glas i will always put protectors on it.

Every screen protector on the market is to narrow for the IP6 because the glas is curved. The curved side will always be unprotected, no screen protector would stick around curves, i had the same problem years ago with the Nokia Lumia. So the best yo can do is buy yourself a sleeve, an ultra thin transparent back case and a screen protector. Have no problems with this combination and the IP6+ still looks original

True but covering most of the screen is better than covering none. The sides are the least likely areas to get scratched anyway.

I expected that however this is way too short imo. The screen protector starts at the very left edge of the screen and doesn't even reach the end of the screen. By screen I mean the actual LCD area.
I've attached some pictures not sure if they help clear it up a little. :)

I think you didn't apply it properly - it's a bit off to the left

Ugh...that would drive me mad. No way I could deal with how that looks on my beautiful new iDevice.

You applied it a bit wrong but i see what you mean, even when you center it properly its would be still a bit narrow. My screen protector is just a little bit wider then the panel itself but it does not reach to ends of the glas of course. The screenprotector is a hard foil, it will not stick to curves. I admit its hard to place it but you get used to it

well, i could not deal with an exposed screen and hair line scratches

My sister iPhone 6 came with a hairline scratch out of the box, it seem to me the coating on the 6 is alot more easier to scratch this time around compared to the 5S.

Just bought an IP6 and olive brown leather case, love it so far.

Haven't bought anything for the screen though as I was under the impression that new screens were a bit more resistant that older iPhones...?

I've had my old IP4 for 4 years, treated it really badly in the last 6 months and upon careful inspection it has a few hairline scratches on it but only under certain viewing angles.

1) Is the IP6 so delicate that require a screen protector? If so which one is the best?

2) without screen protector, how should I wipe my screen? What wipes should I buy?

Thanks all for the useful info.

The actual glass IS hard to scratch, these hairline scratches that can only be seen at a certain angle with a bright light shined on a screen that's turned off are basically scratching off the oleophobic coating. Even if the screen were made of sapphire you'd see the same thing. I had one scratch of this type on my 5S screen after a year of usage with no case and no screen protector, but honestly you had to be searching it out to see it. I'd rather have mostly invisible scratches in the coating than add a film over my phone's beautiful display, especially since the feel of most screen protectors I've seen/touched is not nearly as good as the actual glass/coating.

It's off because otherwise both sides of the screen would be exposed. The protector starts exactly on the edge of the LCD.
The problem is that the edge of the screen protector also shows as a multicolored like much like a scratch.
On one side it's okay but both sides would be annoying hence fitting it off center.

Thanks buddy for the kind reply, I totally agree with you, applying one of these films on top of this beautiful display is a bit like killing it...I think the raised lips of the leather case will be plenty for me.

A brand new phone shouldn't scratch this easily, screen protector or not...the issues are compiling. Now we have ios 8 issues, bentgate, scratch proneness, and lag....

Having had an iPhone since the first one, I have never put a screen protector on them. Never will.
If there have been fine scratches (and there may have been), I have never noticed them at all.

...and this is why I use screen protectors. That scratch would drive me nuts!.

Not rocket science.

Want a pristine screen, get a screen protector. Otherwise, enjoy the prospect of scratches.

My iPhone 6 had a Zagg glass shield within 5 minutes of being purchased. Instant peace of mind.

The oleophobic coating will rub off over time regardless, so in time also removing the scratch.

Every single iPhone has been susceptible to tiny scratches in the oleophobic coating. It's not a 'new' issue, if you even want to label it as an issue in the first place.

You're going to get these scratches if you don't use a screen protector. As someone else mentioned, it's likely just a scratch on the oleophobic layer.

I'm sorry man but that looks terrible to me...I'd rather have the fine hairline scratches over that ANY DAY. I don't understand when people do stuff like that...they put an ugly cover or a screen protector on that actually looks worse, but the phone is nice and shiny underneath...what's the point? It's like putting a sheet or blanket on your couch to keep it clean or a dash mat in your car...IT LOOKS WORSE THAN WITHOUT IT!
