My current plan:

AT&T Family Share 700
$60.00 base plan
$30.00 unlimited texting plan
$29.97 additional line fees ($9.99 per line x 3)
$120.00 data ($30.00 per line x 4)
= $239.97 TOTAL

That is, if I've done all that math properly. AT&T has so many programs going (Mobile Share, Next, keeping 2-year contracts on the table, etc.) that I'm always afraid I've overlooked something that's going to bite me in the end.

You need to factor in the price of the phones into your current plan… so add whatever the subsidized price of the phones x 4.

If you are on 10 GB or higher mobile share value plan its ALWAYS cheaper to go NEXT than to do 2-year contract, I've explained this 100 different ways but this is the easiest formula to check.

With next you pay full retail ($649 for an iphone 6 16 gb for example) plus tax (7%) in FL so approx $695 total for device plus TAX

If you do a 2 year you pay 2 year cost, plus tax, plus $40 upgrade fee, PLUS $600 (over the course of 2 years because you pay $25 more per month x 24) $199 + $14 + $40 + $600= $853

NEXT total cost with tax =$695
2-Year total cost with tax=$853

This is right on the money (no pun intended). And someone may have said it somewhere in the 6 plus (again, no pun intended) pages of posts on this thread.

But the bottom line is this...if you have an iPhone 6 or 6 plus, you will be paying full retail price for it...one way or the other...no matter what. It all comes down to how and to whom you pay. But you will pay. Do the math all day long and as many times as you want. But it will come out the same every time. And let me be more specific...you will pay full price AT LEAST...depending on which way you choose to pay it.

And here is one thing I think people are forgetting on NEXT. If you select the 12 month option, your payments are actually amortized over 20 months, not 12. The 12 months is when you can upgrade. And when you do, you are REQUIRED to trade in that phone you have had for the last 12 months and have been PAYING on for the last 12 months.

Don't get me wrong, I love the iPhone. But Apple and the three major carriers are absolute genius with what they have done on pricing. Again, I love the iPhone, but it is the biggest overpriced scam going right now. A top of the heap iPhone 6 (128 GB) at full retail is 80 bucks cheaper than a top of the heap (128 GB) iPad Air with wifi and LTE. So you wanna tell me the iPhone is not over priced? And make no mistake, you will pay full retail for your iPhone 6...one way or another.

I heard someone mention that if you signed your contract before February of this year it would only be $15. Is that true?

It makes this even more attractive as it would save me an additional $300 since I have 1 more year since I got the note 3 10/2013

That's exactly what was explained to me at corp AT&T store yesterday. If you signed a contract before feb of this year and switch to mobile share plan, your device cost will be 15 dollars a month, not 40. That sold me right there since I have one phone under contract before few and used next on my 6plus. So 30 dollars instead of 55 sounds a lot better. Will be dumping both of our unlimited plans since we get throttled at 5gb and switch to the 40gb plan and will come out to the same price if not a few dollars cheaper after discount.

Does at&t still let you carry unused data forward? That would be awesome if they did. I had 20GB built up when I left them for Verizon's. All from a 2GB/month plan

Just keep in mind those prices don't include device subsidy. You lose the $25 per line discount if you sign a 2-year contract so that smartphone line fee ends up being $40/mo instead of $15. Next or buy outright is going to be the cheaper route with MSVP 10GB or higher plans (you get to keep the $25 discount) so do consider those additional costs when you switch.

http://about.att.com/story/sign_up_...le_data_2_10_lines_starting_at_160_month.html

Att has now doubled their upper level data plans. 40 gb per month for $150 is a reasonable price for metered data. I will be switching and turning in my "unlimited" data that was capped at 5 gb.

The best part is my family will only use 10 gb or so so I can go hog wild on YouTube, FaceTime, hotspot, rdio extreme quality etc.

Never thought this day would come but alas.

You knew that, eventually, AT&T and all the other vendors will find a way to take all your unlimited data plans. Its just s matter of time. So might as well get it over with and get the best deal possible.

This is pretty awesome, I wish this was offered on 10GB plan too. I don't quite need all 20GB, but would be nice to have some headroom.

ok without digging through the thread. I currently have a mobile share plan of 20gb with 5 lines (4 phones, and one tablet)

Do I have to call in to tell them I want double the data? Or do they automatically upgrade me?

I think you need to give them a call.

I think you cns also do it through the app. If those aren't convenient, swing by a store, should take just a couple minutes.

I made the switch from my grandfathered unlimited data plan to the 30GB. I was paying $50/month for Verizon LTE MiFi hotspot (5GB data) for my iPad Air on top of the $89/month for the AT&T unlimited data plan throttled after 5GB. For $40 more I'm at 30GB. I can cancel my Verizon MiFi hotspot since I was past the 2 yr contract and going month to month, and instead use my iPhone as a hotspot. One less device to deal with.

Now that I'm on the 30GB plan, I'd like to get the additional savings by switching to Next 18. I have an iPhone 6 Plus on backorder with AT&T. I chose the 2 yr contract when I ordered the phone online. Can AT&T switch me to Next over the phone? Or do I need to wait until I've received the iPhone 6 Plus, take it an AT&T store, do a return and re-purchase of the phone under Next?

Almost correct.

If you have a family share plan the extra lines are only $10 a pop, and Internet is not req on a dumb phone. So I can add an iPhone to my account for $199, pop in the sim from one of my two main lines, and pay $240 over the next two years.

Phone for $439. After the first year it jumps to 479 due to activation fees, but still less than retail, and I keep my unlimited.

I've seen a lot of posts from people on the 10GB family share plan, wondering why this promotion only starts at 15GB. The reason is:

First AT&T enticed their customers to upgrade from their 2/4/6GB plans to the 10GB family share plan, because it gave you the greatest ($25) discount per phone. A lot of people didn't and still don't need the full 10GB each month.

Now AT&T is further enticing you to upgrade to the 15GB family share plan, so that the data allowance will be doubled to 30GB. Most people probably don't need the data, but it's only $30 a month to go from 10GB a month to 30GB a month.

So, AT&T is persuading you to pay more and more for bigger and bigger buckets of data that most (not all) people will likely never use. It's just business. It's a bit like shopping at Costco...!

I just switched from my 10GB mobile share to the 30GB deal. we've hovered around 8-9GB's a month and I usually dial it down the last week just so we won't go over. I went over by 200MB this past period. It was worth the upgrade for me & only $30 more a month isn't bad.

Yes you can switch over to NEXT… and you're correct… you'll need to wait until you've received the phone. You'll need to return the phone to where you ordered it from… so preordered Apple = you must return it to the Apple store. To make it easier, don't open your phone.

I did the same thing once I received both of our phones.

There is a very real cost of the phones you have in your account. Just the phones in your account cost $650*2 + $750 = $2050 + taxes.

The $151 or $173 sounds great, till you factor in the cost of the phones. If you upgrade your phone once every 3-4 years, it is a bit more financially better.

ATT is definitely not doing you any favors. The unlimited voice + texting is something quite a few people don't really care for but is now bundled into your bill.

We had the grandfathered unlimited data plans, but dropped them years ago. No regrets. Things might be different for a solo user... but with a family, the mobile share plans are a much better deal.

We also stopped getting subsidized phones, as it is cheaper to buy them outright... or to get them on Next. All of our phones are either off contract... or unlocked purchased outright. Hence... they all get the $15/line rate. iPads are a flat $10 each.

So... with my 26% FAN, 10GB of data, unlimited talk, unlimited text, 2X iPhone 5S, 1 iPhone 6+, and 2X iPad Airs... my bill is $151 total.

We do not need more than 10GB (avg is under 5GB), but we really do not use our devices very often for media streaming. I am considering switching to the 15GB (doubled to 30GB) plan... just to change our usage to essentially enable unlimited media streaming. The plan is an extra $30/month, or $22.20 after FAN. Hence, my bill would raise to about $173.

Very well said. I read about a study from a few months ago that most people over inflated their real data usage and needlessly upgraded to higher data buckets, further with all the carriers moving away from the subsidies they are raking in even more $ providing the same level of service.

Next they will offer wifi calling and once again we will be subsidizing their job and paying extra for it ;-)

For in-store sign ups, yes, I think this is going to be a pretty easy upsell for the month of October and AT&T will get a nice $30-50 monthly revenue increase for nothing.

However, power users on these forums will probably make pretty good use of it. We're on the 10GB plan and we're normally at 6-7GB 15 days into our billing cycle. That's with minimal video streaming (no Netflix, just occasional YouTube). On our current plan, we have to be really careful with our usage for the remaining half of the month. I've already been toying with the idea of bumping up to the 15-20GB plans. This promo just made it a sure thing for me. :)

My current plan

2 Smartphone lines
$60 for 700 minutes shared
$30 for unlimited data on Line 1
$20 for 300 GB on Line 2
$10 a month for Line 2

---------

$120

I get throttled at 5 gb

My profit at the end of each 2 year line agreement is $50 as i buy them for $200 but sell them in 2 years for 200 or $250 max

Will i be better off with the NEXT plan? can someone calculate this for me?
