Now that I'm on the 30GB plan, I'd like to get the additional savings by switching to Next 18. I have an iPhone 6 Plus on backorder with AT&T. I chose the 2 yr contract when I ordered the phone online. Can AT&T switch me to Next over the phone? Or do I need to wait until I've received the iPhone 6 Plus, take it an AT&T store, do a return and re-purchase of the phone under Next?

I would just call them and ask. I didn't have an iPhone on backorder when I switched my plan but I'm sure they'll find a way to accommodate you and get you switched over.

Guys I have AT&T grandfathered data plan and I just received a text from AT&T saying they will automatically change my plan at the end of the month.I tried talking to customer service and they told me there's no way around it they are killing unlimited data plans.Seems unfair being I never missed a payment for over 9 years on the unlimited iPhone data plan.

If you're still on contract, I believe that's grounds for getting out of your contract without paying ETF.

My current plan

2 Smartphone lines
$60 for 700 minutes shared
$30 for unlimited data on Line 1
$20 for 300 GB on Line 2
$10 a month for Line 2

---------

$120

I get throttled at 5 gb

My profit at the end of each 2 year line agreement is $50 as i buy them for $200 but sell them in 2 years for 200 or $250 max

Will i be better off with the NEXT plan? can someone calculate this for me?

My current plan looks pretty close to this --- the AT&T rep I talked to earlier said that my bill will go up to ~$180 for 2 lines sharing 30GB (doubled from 15). No deal.

I have a pick your plan with unlimited iPhone data package that was created when the iPhone was originally released. So anybody with a pick your plan unlimited data account will lose it on October 31.

There is a very real cost of the phones you have in your account. Just the phones in your account cost $650*2 + $750 = $2050 + taxes.

The $151 or $173 sounds great, till you factor in the cost of the phones. If you upgrade your phone once every 3-4 years, it is a bit more financially better.

ATT is definitely not doing you any favors. The unlimited voice + texting is something quite a few people don't really care for but is now bundled into your bill.

But it is still cheaper to buy a phone outright (or on Next) vs. buying a subsidized phone... if you are on the 10GB mobile share plan:

Unsubsidized iPhone6: $650
Subsidized iPhone6: $200 + $40 + $600 ($25 extra * 24 months) = $840

When you subsidize a phone... AT&T is essentially giving you a $450 discount on the new phone... and then charging you an extra $640 over two years. Hence, irrespective of which phone you buy... buying it subsidized costs an extra $190 over buying it outright (or on Next).

screenshot of text? interested to see exactly what they say.

Any guesses as to whether this deal will ever come back around? I'm currently on the 10GB family share with my wife and mother. The three of us combined use about 8GB on average, so no real need to upgrade, but the sweet spot is clearly at the 30GB plan for $30 more than I'm paying now, plus it gives lots of "headroom" for additional phone lines (I have three young kids and as much as I hate the prospect of giving my kids cell phones, I have to be realistic) and other devices.

Still, that extra $30 a month would be a complete waste at the moment.

If AT&T is really doing that (I have yet to receive any such texts), I'm not sure where else I would go. T-mobile and Sprint get crap coverage in my area, and Verizon doesn't really represent a cost savings over AT&T

Yeah, between AT&T and Verizon, AT&T is the lesser evil in terms of cost.

This applies to folks on the Mobile Share Value plan, for people in the older plans either unlimited or 3 GB etc with a limited bucket of minutes and/or no texting and are happy with it, the Mobile Share Value Plan + ATT Next makes no sense.

In my case we have 3 phones(2 smart phones, 1 dumb phone, 1 smart phone on unlimited + 1 smart phone on 300 mb) the old school plans with the subsidies come out to about $1900 cheaper over a 2 year period compared to Mobile Shared Value + ATT Next. This assumes both my smart phones are upgraded once every 2 years.

I agree with you that if you are happy with the 10 GB MSV plan, buying the phone outright makes sense, but for most part people are paying for services they just don't use(unlimited talk/text). If you look at the ATT quarterly #s over the last few years the ARPU(Average Revenue/User) is steadily going up.

If you notice, once you switch over to the Mobile Share Value plan you are stuck, forget going back to unlimited you can't even go back to a 2/3GB block with no texting and 450/550 minutes. Unfortunately we here in the US really don't have much of a choice but to put up with this BS. It is unconscionable that quite a few of us here with family plans(2-3 lines) are paying usually anywhere from $175+/month for mobile services.

Almost correct.

If you have a family share plan the extra lines are only $10 a pop, and Internet is not req on a dumb phone. So I can add an iPhone to my account for $199, pop in the sim from one of my two main lines, and pay $240 over the next two years.

Phone for $439. After the first year it jumps to 479 due to activation fees, but still less than retail, and I keep my unlimited.

So if we keep our current plan right now, we don't have to pay the $40 a month since we have two year contract? Only the $10 per line? Now I'm more confused haha

I don't really know if there are 30gb plans but I can tell what I have. 400 minutes of calls, 1000 texts (never use them though) 2gb and unlimited minutes with one person of your choice. That costs 10 euros/month. You can add another 2gb by paying 15/month. It's enoug for me, as I never finish 400 minutes because most of my longer calls are free with my fiancé.
It just scares me there are 140bucks/month plans somewhere, that's all :)

I'm always jealous of European carriers plans! I think the high prices in the US are due to the larger amount of coverage they have to provide so your paying for a massive amount of coverage whether you need it/want it....of course the US telecommunication business is crooked in general but oh well...at least its getting better! Besides $140 USD would be like 110 Euro's for you guys :p Some day I'll live in Europe for a bit and enjoy your normal priced plans :):D

Don't forget the gas there is like at least twice as expensive than in the us so it all evens out in the end but I think you're point about U.S. companies having to cover a much bigger area makes sense.

Keep in mind the logic about gas being twice as expensive is due to taxes. Europe has good public transportation which is just not the case here other than New York and few other large cities.

The new EU rules call for EU wide roaming, so the logic of the US being a large country etc compared to smaller EU countries will not apply soon.

As Ghostbuster pointed out, it's $40/line (sorry, my bad), so it'd be $290 plus tax.

So for 4 phones, that breaks down to $72.50/month. If they each shared the 30GB evenly, that'd be 7.5GB per line.

I'm not sure there are even pre-paid plans where you can get 7.5GB/unlimited talk/unlimited text for $72.50/month?

Yup, they get their money either way you look at it.

I have 4 iPhones all have unlimited data, 1 regular phone. We're on a old legacy family plan, we upgrade every time we're eligible. Bill is around $270 a month. Unlimited text, unlimited night/weekend, 750 min a month of which we never use and have more rollover minutes than we'd ever use.

I've never been a fan of the Next plan, when/if AT&T decides to kill unlimited plans I'd move to it otherwise I save nothing since I have no desire to use the Next pricing and it'd be $40 a line.

Yes but I've been to Europe a few times. It is much more expensive than the U.S. so they might have cheaper cell plans but life is very expensive there.

They have a much better safety net compared to the US. I am not here to argue about economic policies and life here in the US & EU. That is a debate for another forum.

The reality is the mobile/cable providers in this country take us the consumers for a ride. There is really no reason for them to constantly hike our bills and force us to pay for stuff that the vast majority of us don't want or need(I could care less for ESPN, but I am forced to pay for it), I really don't need a texting plan but with Mobile Shared Value I am forced to pay for it.

Ok we have a 4 line grandfathered plan.

1-4 lines each have unlimited data
2- 700 minute share for voice
3- unlimited mobile to mobile
4-unlimited mobile to ANY mobile
5-roll over minutes
6- unlimited text
7- aList

Our monthly bill with taxes and with my FAN discount is $215 NET.

What can this new plan give me that it doesn't already have?

Seems they really want you off unlimited.

They are literally the exact same cost in almost every case.
Keyword being almost. For the most part, pricing on both carriers is quite similar. However, there are and have been cases where Verizon is a smidgen more expensive (like $5-25 more per month).

For example, when Mobile Share and Share Everything plans were first introduced, a 10GB plan with 4 lines on AT&T was $240/mo while on Verizon, it was $260/mo ($480 diff in 2 years). On the old grandfathered plans, Verizon would have also cost us $15 more than AT&T ($360 diff in 2 years). Right now, the discount for BYOD on plans less than 10GB is $15 on AT&T and just $10 on Verizon. Also, getting the BYOD discount from Verizon is like pulling teeth. With AT&T, it seems to get applied automatically. With Verizon, the reps and Verizon's main website don't tell you about it and it feels like you need to know the super secret handshake to get it added to your account.

I do have to say though, for a single line with a major carrier, the 2GB individual line for $60 is a great deal.

I wrote this in another thread but I just feel like this is a really desperate attempt for AT&T to get rid of unlimited data users. Could there be a reason? Perhaps when the next version of LTE is out (Edge>3G>4G>LTE), that they won't be allowed to throttle unlimited users?

You have the FCC Chairman who is basically the top dog in the FCC breathing down carriers necks about the throttling.

Were you tethering on your UL data plan? That's a reason why they would kick you off.
