anyone been/going to a store today?
Yes, I did. I was at the Falls (Miami) this morning at 8:45am, returning my 6 and hoping to find a 6+. I originally bought my 6 on the 20th (Saturday after launch) and only had until tomorrow to make this change. When I got to the store, they said they had no iPhones at all, so I sadly walked away.
Walking back to my car, I starting talking to the security guard and he told me there was about 50-75 people this morning at 5am, mostly the same scalpers that show up everyday.
Disappointed, and accepting the reality that it's going to be nearly impossible to beat those scalpers, AND knowing I only have one day left to return my 6, I walked back to the Apple store, got a refund and "re-earned" my ATT eligibility.
I spoke briefly with one of the shift leads, and I told him I'd hang around for a bit, hoping that a shipment may come in and I can grab my 6+. He told me that even if they DID come in today, they wouldn't sell them until tomorrow, because then they'd have tons of people just lurking and waiting in the apple store on a daily basis. It made complete sense to me then, and I walked away and came to work.
But now when I think about it, I'm not sure if I'm buying what he sold me. I've read numerous times here on MR about people walking into stores which are sold out (online), and just happen to be there at the perfect time (surprise! -- midday delivery!), and pick up a phone. I suppose I was naive, but oh well.
I just placed an order on apple.com for my 6+, and at least get in while I can on the current 3-4 week delivery time. However I'll continue my daily hunt locally (Apple Stores, Targets, Best Buys) and if I'm able to grab something I will, and cancel that online order.
edit: I forgot to mention this. As I was in the process of getting my refund, I asked the Apple employee about the "order on apple.com for the 2 year contract-guaranteed personal pickup-then change to the ATT Next plan-on pickup" switcharoo, and this is what he said: First off, that it can be done, but it's a "hassle". The way it works is like this, they are not allowed to sell you the same phone --you just refunded. So in a sense, that phone they held for you, that you purchased at 3am, they can't re-scan that same phone (serial number) for a refund, and then re-sell it to you on a Next plan. What they need to do is, refund that phone they held for you, and grab ANOTHER phone that's available (hoping they have another one that's spec'd to what you wanted (ordered), color and size...(personally I wouldn't give a **** and would take any color, and either 64gb or 128gb) and NOT guaranteed for another person (obviously) and THEN they can scan that sucker (different serial number), and do the switcharoo to the Next plan. Who knows, maybe this is all a lie and he was talking crap, high off his coffee and his lack of sleep. But contrary to what the shift lead told me, I'm still kind of buying his switcharoo "hassle" process because it makes sense to me (at least for right now).
But in the end, who knows. Perhaps I'm the sucker for ultimately believing (or not believing?) what either of them told me.
Sigh.
