I use Time Machine to back-up my internal laptop drive, and also an external hard drive.

I also keep a clone of the external hard drive.

The external hard drive died recently, and I replaced it with the clone.

Is there a way to get Time Machine to treat the original external and the clone as the same? So that it will only back-up the changes, and not back-up another 500 GBs worth of data?

I have never gotten this to work. I think it's a disk hardware-ID/file-mapping/security issue. If you are successful, please share your secret. Good luck.
