Guys I just want to make sure, I should be able to cancel a 2 year contract personal pick up order, and change it to a Next plan in store, especially if im doing next on a completely separate line that is eligible for upgrade right? (meaning i wont need to wait for upgrade eligibility to reset)
Im just gonna be nervous until it is all done and in my hands lol.
I finally snagged my AT&T 64gb SG 6+ thanks to iStockNow!!! I had a few other opportunities with it popping up online but I never killed the trigger because I'm on Next. I was always hesitant to order and try to switch online after reading the horror stories of people waiting a week to reset their eligibility and getting turned down at the store. I became impatient after multiple failed attempts waiting in the morning for opening. My impatience got the best of me yesterday and I decided to order once I saw it pop-up in a local store. When I got there I explained the situation and expected to get turned down right away but instead the sales guy knew what to do but wanted to wanted to run it past a manager and get a phone specialist involved. The manager approved it and the specialist I got assigned to was awesome! He knew exactly what needed to be done and had done this for other customers too. He rang up the purchase and activated the phone under the 2-year contract (opposite of what I read on here saying it won't work if the phone is activated). He then processed the return and went to the back stockroom before completing it so that it could get processed for him to re-purchase immediately. When returning it he made sure to point out that the screen said my eligibility would reset immediately and that was the most important part. He rang me up with Next and there was an error but he said that's normal because of all of the account changes going on. He explained that an Apple rep in a call center is working with AT&T to fix the issue when that error occurs. After about 5-10 minutes, it went through successfully and I was out the door with my 6+!! My advice to all who are trying to do this is to make sure you work with someone who knows what they are doing. He mentioned that most stores probably wouldn't do it but they have done so many in the past that they knew all the possibilities.
For those still looking for phones, I have some advice to share from my experiences. If you are on Next and chasing a 6+, your options are to risk the in-store pickup or go to the store the morning after receiving a nightly alert (and get there early). My local store has a group of scalpers that hang around the store all day with messenger bags buying up everything that is available so getting lucky with a walk-in is next to impossible. My advice would be if you see an overnight alert for the phone you want, they should have a few for opening but you need to be one of the first in line.
Also, check other stores. Apple Stores get the largest shipments but they are also flooded with scampers and others trying to get the phone. Go to lesser known places and you may have luck. Best Buy and Target have been great to me with being honest with their process. When a phone comes in at Target, customers have 48 hours to pick it up. After the 48 hours it goes back into inventory and can be sold so keep an eye on stores that have reserved stock showing on iStockNow for several days in a row. Best Buy does get phones but they tend to have a lot of pre-orders that they are filling first. If you can find a store that has fulfilled all pre-orders already, that's the one to keep an eye on. My last suggestion (especially for you DFW folks), check Fry's Electronics. The local ones get a steady supply of 6+'s, they can do Next upgrades, and their employees have been incredibly helpful with this process for me.
I have one last piece of info that I learned yesterday that can help answer the walk up vs. online inventory question. Products only show up online as available if there are 5 or more of that item in stock. This would explain why it seems people are able to get the phone in the morning after receiving an alert the night before. This also makes sense on why we get mixed answers asking if there is separate inventory because technically there isn't, it just doesn't display low quantity items online.
Sorry for typing out a book but hopefully this helps someone snag their prize. Good luck!!
