Genius said it's a brand new, but i looked up the serial number

Here's the info

The phone was manufactured in September, so I'm guessing it's not a refurb..

but the model number says NGAU2LL/A (retail ones starts with M not N)

am i just paranoid?

This has been an ongoing question since the iphone4. Unfortunately there's no way to really know. However rest with the satisfaction that:
1. It could be new
OR
2. It's a refurb that has been thoroughly checked and put into a new casing

Either way you have a fully working phone that's cosmeticslly perfect

It's a refurb, whether or not it has been in the hand's of another consumer, I do not know.

My guess is no, it has not been in the hands of another person.

I'm going to say this phone came off the assembly line right next to 'regular' phones, and got put into a 'white box' with no accessories, versus the next phone down the line getting put into a retail box with all accessories.

So it's technically CALLED a refurb, but it's a brand new phone just like the rest.

Even a true refurbished phone that has been in the hands of someone else is still basically brand new since they replace the body. All they do is slap the old repaired internals into a brand new shell.

Heck I'd almost rather have one that went through quality control that second time, myself...

Any phone made week 39 and before will be 100% New regardless. Week 39 is September 22-Sept 28.

It might be a return that someone bent and the Genius just bent it back and reboxed...

better luck next time

Why did you take the refurb in the first place? If you're within the 14-day return window, you should always just return it and then purchase one that's in a retail box with accessories. Were you past the 14-day return period?

refurb is not a bad word nothing to worry about

it carries the same warranty and quality as "new"

Well .. I disagree generally... but not for the recent 6 or 6+.

Refurbs may be customer returns cos' the customer is picky... e.g. light bleed, yellowing etc. If these parts are not judged to be defective then it will be tidied up and presented as a refurb.

I have had refurbs with suspiciously yellow screens.

What a load of garbage.
People should stop posting about things they know nothing about.
Yout yellow screen issues had nothing to due with being a refurb.

There are 3 device classifications:

Retail
service
Refurb

Service devices - screens, faceplate and battery are all replaced. Other internals are refurbed. When you get a whitebox you're getting a service device.

I tend to agree with this more because everytime I go to the Apple store and when people try to get their device replaced, Genius will always say "Oh we can replace you a service unit"
