Apple to Open 25 New Stores in China Over Next Two Years, Says CEO Tim Cook

Apple will open 25 new Apple Stores in China over the next two years, according to CEO Tim Cook who spoke to Chinese news outlet Sina (via Reuters). The news comes as Cook was reported yesterday to be meeting with China's Vice Minister Ma Kai to discuss the security of user data. The CEO also tweeted a picture of himself in Zhengzhou, where he visited a Foxconn assembly factory.

Apple opened its first location in China in 2008 with a store in Beijing, and has since built a number of other stores in other major areas like Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Chongqing. The company has also greatly expanded its presence in the region throughout the past few years, striking a deal with the country's biggest carrier China Mobile and meeting with government officials to discuss market growth.

Later this week, Cook will reportedly attend meetings at Beijing's Tsinghua University, where he is a part of the advisory board to the university's School of Economics and Management. The CEO is said also to be meeting with Chinese firms Baidu and Alibaba over the next week to discuss collaboration.

China is where all the money's at, too bad they don't care much for privacy.

Funny how Tim preaches diversity and rights. I guess it matters only up until $$ makes it ok not to matter anymore.

China is the worlds second largest economy. The US is the first and has 257 Apple Retail Stores ( not including authorised resellers ).

You can get angry all you like but as a business China is equally as important as the US.

Hasn't Apple claimed that they'll make X new stores in China within Y years, but then they always fall way short of that goal?

Someone should compile a chart of announcements Apple makes saying how many stores they'll have at a certain time vs. how many they actually have at that time.

Not angry at all, just pointing out the hypocrisy. If your ethics and morals are only important when money isn't involved, Apple is better served just keeping its mouth shut and not weighing in on social issues.

Who knows what the hiring policy and standards on ethics will be in those Apple Stores? Perhaps the start of a revolution.

Looks like that iCloud harvesting really bothered Cook ... yeah, it bothered him so much, he announced another 25 retail outlets ... the REAL reason Cook was in China was ... wait for it ... follow the money. (He probably never brought up the iCloud issue.)

Western governments and corporations speak with forked tongues when it comes to China. No time to worry about human rights issue when you're busy counting the cash.

Do you sincerely think Apple refusing to sell its products in China through its own stores would put some kind of pressure on the government to improve its human rights record? Besides, it is not his money on the line, that belongs to the shareholders.

How much money did you donate yourself to dissident groups in China or how many protests did you attend in front of Chinese consulates?

I wonder...
Can companies doing business in China expatriate their revenue, or does all that cash have to stay in the country?

Does China require a government accessible version of Apple's FileVault? Or will they ban it outright?
