A Stoned Throw From Ground Zero
The gang over at OSXAudio just turned me on the this wonderful project.

It's FREE open source Linux and they are working very hard to upgrade
their OS X beta versions in the very near future.
No auths, no iLoks, XSkeys, none of the insane prices etc.
There is also an amazing selection of free plug-ins.

I would love to see these converted over to AU or VST.

This is meant to be a FREE alternative to ProTools, Logic, Cubase, Live etc.
so I hope you guys will contribute your SKILLZ to help out.
Right now it's a diamond in the rough, but the potential is amazing.
Right now it works through X11, but they are working on an improved version
that will run natively in OS X.

I installed JacksOSX and tried to run the newest 4.4MB ardour 0.99 version
but ended up with a grey background screen.
This may be due to the build not being quite ready for 10.4.3.
BTW, if this happens, simply hit APPLE/Q to escape.

NOTE: Benny's link on the OSXaudio page takes you to the 8.7MB beta.

I installed this after installing JacksOSX and it works!

Considering the amount of time people have been trying to work on
"alternatives" those of you who are gifted at programming will hopefully
help to make this a reality for everyone.

Please share this with anyone you may know that can help support this
worthy project.

Many thanks to Benny and Paul Davis.

It does look like things are progressing along nicely.
They've already released updates to version .99 and a test version of 2.0

This might work out even better since Digidesign has no release date for their universal binary versions of ProTools.

I've been following the archive posts and it's coming along, but it is still a work in progress.
They need qualified productive input, testing and solutions to problems.

I still had trouble getting the newest 0.99.1 beta to start up and had to use the other beta mentioned above.

Hopefully it won't be long before the 2.0 version runs natively without X11.

X11 is an old, old windowing system w/ its own toolkit that was designed to be portible across platforms (mostly different unixes). one of the cool things about it was the way that clients and servers could run on different machines.

anyway, a bunch of cool programs were written for it (like the big googly eyes that follow the movement of your mouse pointer) and it's still supported on a number of platforms, including osx.

X11 is an optional install on your OS disc.

It allows you to run Unix and Linux applications.

ardour.org does need qualified testing help, so anything you can contribute
helps everyone.

Everything I've read indicates that the goal is to have a truly professional
open source DAW without all the licensing restrictions. iLoks, dongles, serials and authorizations.
They are also building a large assortment of plugins, so any help in that effort also helps everyone.

ardour version 2.0 beta has been released for testing and will eventually eliminate the need for
X11, so you'll hopefully be able to run it and Jacks natively.

If you want to follow what's going on and add something useful, go to the ardour community archives and read through the posts.

Will do. I guess i will have to wait for the non-X11 beta, unless i can install it now.

It sounds like a great project with an admirable cause and i would love to help in any way i can.
