Check out Tulum, that's where all the Mayan Ruins are. Truly an amazing sight.

In the end, just have fun. Explore, get lost, find your own way, drink like a fish, meet fellow travellers.....you'll have a blast.

Tulum is awesome, something that I'll always remember and I was there 13 years ago.

My sister just got back from a week long trip to Tulum/Yucatan about 2 weeks ago and she's american. She mentioned that you can't go up the ruins anymore.

Yes I've heard the same thing, Chichen Itza is deteriorating and no one is allowed up anymore. Shame.....

now that we are here this place is awesome. staying at the gran porto real wedged right between the beach and fifth avenue. the staff is fantastic, the room is great with a balcony, free wifi, and 5th avenue is gorgeous, much nicer than expected - reminds me a LOT of a cross between phuket and seoul - tropical like phuket with all the open air grass hut roof restaurants and nice ambiance (minus hot prostitutes everywhere lol) with the shops of seouls myeong dong district.

resort food is good, beach could be better due to an erosion problem but i knew that beforehand, and if you just go 200 feet either way its fine so no biggie. best part is a jacuzzi on the roof on the very end of the hotel - nobody seems to even know its there.

gonna do some underground river/ cave exploration tomorrow which ahould be sweet, then cozumel with a scooter in a couple days

highly recommend playa del carmen and the gran portal real

Sorry I don't believe you went alone then without an armed escort. Maybe you didn't see the article Cancun Drug Murders 2013 or Is Mexio Safe To Visit for Spring Break.

Look, it's so easy for people to be mislead by the media about the dangers in Mexico and horror stories. In reality it's way overblown, it seems you're one of these people that are legitimately full of fear when it comes to Mexico. Are you afraid to leave your own neighborhood? Perhaps it's a difference in location since you're from upstate New York (and presumably grew up there) when I grew up in the southwest my entire life, where all the kids go to Mexico to drink and party when they turn 18.

Last time I was in Playa was May 2012. I was walking around day and night in board shorts and flip flops, usually in party mode with a few drinks in me. I found myself in the touristy area (5th ave) and the not so touristy seedy areas in a dark street by myself, and I never had a single problem. Incase you didn't see my posts on page 1 of this thread, I never stay in a resort - I always stay in simpler accommodation so I can immerse myself more in the local culture.

I can tell you from first hand experience it's not THAT bad, and I didn't have an armed body guard.
