Another user saying yes to iTunes backup here. :cool: Did it twice when I upgraded from 4 -> 5 then 5 -> 6 , no issues either time.

Since the OP is not looking for a backup, but rather an easy way to ensure photos are in a new device, consider using iCloud Shared Photo Albums. They don't use up iCloud storage, have pretty high limits, and ensure that photos are available to any iOS device using that iCloud account. Probably not an option if you have 200G of photos, but otherwise a decent solution.

Restoring as new will purge the system caches and any garbage data you have hanging around (i.e., the "Other" directory). Restoring from a backup will purge the app caches, but will leave the system files intact.

I see. So restoring from a backup will NOT remove the "Other" data.
