$5 billion for 12,000 people; that's over $400,000 per person...

The money is for the building not the people in it. The building has more value for Apple than what it cost. Divinging the number of people who'll use it by the total cost misses the point. The building is for Apple, the company. It's a testament to and a symbol of the attention to detail and care Apple put into everything they do. And on some subconscious level the public, the media and employees of Apple will feel that when it's up and running.

Considering the fact that the dumpy house I bought down the street costed 1.4 million, Apple got a bargain.

Is home ownership for non-wealthy people pretty much impossible now in the Bay Area? A "dumpy house" being worth 1.4 million is ridiculous.

Here in Miami (another overpriced market) you can get a decent 3br in my neighborhood for around $200K.

Yeah it's a tough area to live in. All those people we need like teachers, police officers, clerical workers, etc. are getting pushed out of the area. Lots of elderly folks who bought their houses for $100k back in the 70s and 80s are sitting on goldmines. There are still apartment complexes for lower incomes, but the housing demand is driving the land prices up. It's particularly dependent on the school districts--better schools really drive up the cost of nearby homes. All that said, it's an awesome place to live.

The facility is the result of the industry's ongoing out-and-out perquisite competition for top employee talent, outside of salary and culture. Every once is a while, TV viewers get to see what it's like to work within the walls of firms such as Google or Facebook. These are veritable playgrounds in some respects.
