Does anyone know of a technical (i.e. legit) reason why I can't run a HDMI cable from my TV to a 30 pin Digital AV adapter, to a Lightning to 30 pin adapter to my iOS device?

I get an error message which is kind of annoying. I'm guessing either there is a technical reason why I can't do this, or Apple simply wants people to fork out the £40 for the new lightning adapter.

Accessories mentioned:

Lightning>30 pin adapter
