Value of Mini?

This is not a for sale post; I hope this is a legal topic.

I have a Late 2012 Mac Mini... you know, the last one that's actually upgradeable. It's maxed out... Quad Core i7, 16 gig RAM, 256 gig Samsung 840 SSD and 1 TB hard drive. It also has 3yr AppleCare. I put in the memory and Samsung drive myself using the kit from OWC.

I've been kicking around the idea of upgrading to a refurb'd iMac (late 2013) to have a second 27" display, since the Mini can only drive one Thunderbolt display. If I did that, I'd sell the Mini. Since there are no refurb'd Minis on the Apple site right now, I'm wondering what it might be worth? I had been thinking $900; it might be worth more... might be worth less, I dunno. What do you guys think?

FWIW if/when I do sell it, it'll go on Craigslist. :)

I can't imagine it being worth very much, considering the new 2014 models are so much faster and cheaper than the 2012s were.

I recently bought a similar mini for $950 on eBay and felt like I got a good deal. Mine is the 2.3 quad model with no AppleCare, but otherwise the same as yours. So yours could reasonably fetch more. Good luck!

Even the most maxed-out 2014 Mac mini doesn't have a quad-core, so I'm pretty sure his old maxed-out 2012 is worth at least around 1000$USD.

Hilarious. You're like a broken record dissing the 2012 Minis on every thread. We get it. You bought a 2014 and want to feel good about your purchase. Unfortunately the reality is that the 2014 is a paltry upgrade compared with the 2012.

As a starting point, you can check Mac2Sell, eBay (including completed sales), and Amazon for prices of similar models, to get an idea of what a reasonable price may be. Don't check just once source, but get an average from all sites for a more accurate idea. Some sites may be higher/lower than is realistic. Then adjust the price to account for condition, configuration, remaining AppleCare coverage (if any), etc. If the model is recent enough, you can also check the Apple refurbished store to see what similar models are selling for.

I'd say that 900 bucks is what that kind of mini goes for on the second hand market in Sweden. Just one thing though. I don't think your Applecare is valid when you've done the mini upgrades yourself.

Funny thing, that - the new Mini is 40% slower than the Mini being discussed here.

And even funnier - you can't buy a 2014 Mini that is as fast as the fastest Mini models from 2012. Perhaps you might want to acquaint yourself with those basic facts before posting.

OP - With everything you've added to it, you'd probably get $1000-1100.

This reminds me of the 2010s when they were discoed. The 2.66 was a hot product for a few months and selling used for equal or better than retail. Last Mini with optical.

That's the thing...eBay fees will be higher (obviously), but in my experience the sale price is likely to be a lot higher on eBay, too. Just take care about being scammed...

Yes its pretty insane that a model that is two years older have a higher 2nd hand value than the new model. I don't think it will change until as long as Apple stays on the soldered ram/screwed down bottom plate path.
