Is it possible to burn an MP4 video to a DVD with a stock app of OS X so it would be playable on DVD players? I guess it would have to convert it to an ISO then burn? Is this possible to do in OS X without a 3rd party app?

Not that I am aware of, but there are decent free apps that can help you.

I have software that can create a VOB/ISO but when it comes to burning that file, ins't there extras needs for things like auto-run?

No, not since Apple stopped including iDVD on Macs. All that you can do on a Mac is burn a data dvd. You need to burn a Video DVD.

As previous stated, Burn will do that. Just make sure that you choose Video DVD.

There are also some free DVD Creators on the App Store.

By the way, what you're looking to do is convert the video to the DVD format (MPEG2 in some kind of special container), not convert to ISO. Though whatever tool you use might give you an ISO with the files on it.

tried all of this

ok so I installed Burn on my Mac (which does have iDVD on it) but when I tried opening the zip file, it says there's no app on my computer to open the zip file with.....leaving me in complete & utter frustration! (this is hours into this project already)

So I'm now trying with iDVD, which doesn't seem to be any easier.

I've tried putting a movie onto flash drive, then plugging flash drive into computer...no luck!

I've tried burning a disc thru iTunes but when it gives me an option for burning to dvd, it's says dvd, but then a box comes up saying I'm trying to burn a data dvd which will not play on a dvd player!

I did see a really easy option, by opening up a new burn folder in Finder, burned the disc, then got a disc error on the dvd player connected to the tv!

H-E-L-P!!!! please!!!
I have a late model 08 macbook with snow leopard and can't seem to understand!

Ok. First, please download an application called The Unarchiver (you can find it in the Mac App Sore, it is free) that will handle all the .zip etc. files on your computer.
Second, download/use Burn (http://burn-osx.sourceforge.net/Pages/English/home.html) to finish your project.
(You may try another application for burning as well (it is free in Mac App Store): 1 Click DVD Creator.)

yaaay!!!! (kinda)

ok so I did all of this, thinking things are going alright but when the encoding is finished, it says there's not enough room on my startup disk.

I reach out & find suggestions for TidyUp, which I installed but when I try opening .dmg file a box comes up saying it cannot open TidyUp because there are no mountable file systems!!!

anyone???

Thanks so much for all of your help everyone!!

----------

I went thru & emptied my trash, which then allowed me to open TidyUp but I have Mac OS X 10.6.8, which TidyUp is not compatible with!

suggestions??

thanks

How much of free space do you have on your hard drive?

Burn issues

ok so I'm still deleting files, mostly apps I don't use so it's taking a while!!!
Abt half done with that, now I tried to use Burn again & it went thru all of the encoding process, allowing me to actually click on 'Burn' in the Burn app and the result what that there was an error 'authoring' the DVD

what's this mean??? I've already cleared up some space, deleting the apps started at 19,000 items to delete (emptying my trash) and it's now at 7000 left to delete....so progress is being made..

how do I tell exactly how much space I have on my hard drive?

yep, i'm quite the novice!

Thanks

----------

When I click on details in the 'authoring failed' box this is what it shows....all foreign to me!!!

Everything looks fine, except that DVDauthor can't make a disc image or burn the disc: this is left to tools like mkisofs and dvd+rw-tools.
To check the available disk space: click on the Apple logo in the right upper corner ➤ About this Mac ➤ More Info ➤ Storage.

Ok, let's go through it again:

1. You open the Burn application (http://burn-osx.sourceforge.net/Pages/English/home.html)
2. You make the necessary settings.
3. You drag the .mpg4 file into the window.
4. After conversion burn.

This tutorial shows step by step what to do:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jhkMLn1rnTI

What Mac do you have? Do you use an internal (built-in writer) or external? What DVD media you use, brand, type (-R, +R, RW)?

Easier than that. Just select the Macintosh HD icon on your Desktop then press Cmd+I to open it's Information Panel.

HI there again,
Yes I still have it on my desktop.

I was successful for a moment!!! I can't seem to close Burn now while it seems to be stuck encoding one of my movies.

My NEW question to y'all is how to burn a movie from my computer to iDVD, which I still have, also. I'm using Snow Leopard n have never used iDVD.

thanks I truly appreciate it
Dawn

You have to free up some more space, if you want to burn DVDs. 1.7GB won't be enough because of many reasons.
Unfortunately I ca't help you with iDVD as I have never used it.

It's a general recommendation that you have about 10% of your hard drive free to help your Mac run efficiently.

Open/run iDVD. Drag and drop your movie file into the main window. You can choose between various themes, either 4:3 or 16:9 formats. When ready, click on the Burn button.

I used to like using idvd and got a new computer this year with free iwork and ilife apps in mavericks. But to my dismay, it had no idvd. So I manually installed version 7.1 from an old disk I have for ilife '11 and updated it to version 7.1.2 with the update available at http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1414. Such disks are no longer available from apple but can still be found on ebay, amazon, etc. I also had to manually install the extras to get the old themes (I use brushed metal which is one of the old themes). You can get the old themes here: http://swcdn.apple.com/content/down...JdtxrNxyz75GZsHQnc8Bwbd7/iDVDExtraContent.pkg This update doesn't show up in the mac app store under mavericks and has to be installed manually.

Absolutely. My own experience, you may find that encoding a DVD means that you may need twice the free space that the final DVD needs to do that encoding.
So, roughly 4.5GB x 2 or 9GB free space. A dual-layer DVD would need twice that.
You are limited by your RAM, more can help to some degree. Your MacBook likely can have 4GB, double what you have now, maybe 6GB, depending on which one you have.
Your next goal is really to get more free space.
That 10% rule-of-thumb is a good one, and some even say up to 25%. Anyway, 10% would (I'm guessing what you have) leave you with at least 12GB free space, and plenty for burning DVDs. I like restarting after each encode/burn is complete. You will assure that you free up all the space that is used for the process.

OK, now that Burn does not work under El Capitan, which software would you suggest for DVD-Player compatible video DVD burning? Most app store apps seems like rubbish to me.

Looks like Permute does the trick, 10 times for free, then it's just $9.99 on the App Store.

There is a free way to do it in El Capitan and still with iDVD and Terminal.

Instead of burning directly with iDVD you save the project as an image file and then burn it with Terminal.

1. Save as Disk Image

File -> Save as Disk Image (save as filename.img on desktop)

2. Burn with Terminal

hdiutil burn -speed max /Users/username/Desktop/filename.img -noverifyburn

(replacing username with your username on your computer).

Note: Officially iDVD 7.1.2 system requirements is
  • Mac OS X 10.6.7 or later
according to https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1414?locale=en_US

There is no specified maximum system.
